Crochet Ladybug Flower Applique Set – Free Crochet Pattern

Easy
Basic stitches, no shaping and finishing.
Materials:
- Double knitting light worsted yarn in yellow, green, cream, light brown, dark pink, dark brown/black and light blue (approx 15 – 25 gr for each color)
- Double knitting light worsted yarn in purple (approx 50 gr)
- Small amount of pink and black yarn
- Crochet hook 3,5 mm
- Yarn Needle
Abbreviations:
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet
sl st – slip stitch
Gauge: Tension is not necessary for this project to be perfect!
Finished Size:
Afghan Block – approx 23 cm x 23 cm with border
Notes: I whipped stitched my appliques to the afghan block – I did not stitch the sun petals or flower petals

INSTRUCTIONS:
The Appliqués
All the appliqués are worked with a 3,50 mm hook
The Sun:
With yellow double knitting light worsted yarn
Make a magic ring
Row 1: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5DC into ring (6 Dc), turn
Row 2: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 2 DC into each ST until end, (12 DC), turn
Row 3: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next ST. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Rep from * until end (18 DC)
Row 4: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. Rep from * until end (24 DC)
Row 5: CH3, work 2DCtog, CH3, SL ST into next ST. *SL ST into next ST, CH3, work 2DCtog, CH3, SL ST into next ST. Repeat from * 4 more times (6 petals made)
Row 6: Work 2 SC over first 3CH post, work 1 SC into top of DC, CH3, SL ST into SC just made, work 2 SC over next 3CH post, SL ST into ST below 3CH post.
*Work 2 SC over next3CH post, work 1 SC into top of DC, CH3, SL ST into SC just made, work 2 SC over next 3CH post, SL ST into ST below 3CH post. Repeat from * for the next 4 petals.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
The Flower:
With blue double knitting light worsted yarn
This part is made in continuous rounds – a stitch marker may be needed to keep round count
Rnd 1: Work 6 SC into ring
Note: for each round that follows work into backloops only!
Rnd 2: Work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC)
Rnd 3: Work 2 SC into next , work 1 SC into next ST. *Work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next ST. Rep from * until end (18 SC)
Rnd 4: Work 2 SC into next , work 1 SC into next 2 STS. *Work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 2 STS. Rep from * until end (24 SC)
Note: work through both loops!
Rnd 5: CH3, work 2DCtog, CH3, SL ST into next ST. *SL ST into next ST, CH3, work 2DCtog, CH3, SL ST into next ST. Repeat from * 4 more times (6 petals made)
Rnd 6: Work 2 SC over first 3CH post, work 3 SC into top of DC, work 2 SC over next 3CH post, SL ST into ST below 3CH post.
*Work 2 SC over next3CH post, work 3 SC into top of DC, work 2 SC over next 3CH post, SL ST into ST below 3CH post. Repeat from * for the next 4 petals.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
With pink yarn SL ST through every exposed loop – starting at the center of the flower.
The Tree Branch:
With light brown double knitting light worsted yarn
CH 21
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 5 STS, work 1 HDC into next 5 STS, work 1 DC into next 6 STS, work 1 TR into next 3 STS (20 STS)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing
The Leaves:
With green double knitting light worsted yarn
CH 7
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next ST, work 6 DC into last ST – continue working on the opposite side of chain, work 1 DC opposite 1 DC, work 1 HDC opposite each of the 2 HDC, work 1 SC opposite 1 SC, work a SL ST opposite the last SC. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
CH12
Work 3 SC into 2nd CH from hook, SL ST into each CH until end. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
The Ladybug:
Wings:
With dark pink double knitting light worsted yarn
Make a magic ring
Row 1: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5DC into ring (6 Dc), turn
Row 2: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 2 DC into each ST until end, (12 DC), turn
Row 3: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next ST. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Rep from * until end (18 DC) DO NOT TURN –
SL ST across bottom (flat part) of wing.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
With dark brown/black yarn embroider some French knots onto wings.
Body:
With dark brown/black double knitting light worsted yarn
CH11
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 TR into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS,
work 5 SC into last ST,
continue along the bottom
work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 TR into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 SC into next, SL ST into next ST.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Head:
With dark brown/black double knitting light worsted yarn
Make a magic ring
Work 6 DC into ring, turn
work 2 SC over 1 ST post, work 1 SC into next 4 DC, work 2 SC over last post.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
The Afghan Block:
With purple double knitting light worsted yarn and 3.50 mm Hook
CH41
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end, turn ((40 SC)
Row 2 – 50: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (40 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With the 3,50 mm Hook join the cream double knitting light worsted yarn with a 3CH into the first SC of the top row
Border: Work 2 DC into the same ST as 3CH (counts as 1 DC). *SKIP 2 STS, SL ST into next ST, work 3 DC into same ST. Repeat from * all around block.
Note when working down/up the sides of the row – SKIP 2 ROWS for the SKIP 2 STS
