IMPORTANT NOTES:

• please check your stitch count – this IS important for joining!
• All sizes mentioned are approximate only – this ALL depends on YOUR hook, YOUR yarn and YOUR tension.
  – for this project to be joined with the least effort be sure to use the SAME hook throughout!
• I use US Crochet stitch terminology.

My Hook:
4.00 mm

CH – chain

What you will crochet:

2 x 6 inch (15 cm) in height and 18 inch in length rectangles

Joining – 16 x mini squares into 4 x 6 inch squares

INSTRUCTIONS:

Striped Rectangle: Make 2

Colors I used:

• rectangle square 1 – (G) turquoise; (C) marigold; (E) kiwi.
• rectangle square 2 – (H) azure; (D) sherbet; (F) mint.

Takes approx to 30/45 minutes to make one rectangle – depending on skill and how quickly you crochet.

NOTE: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – You WILL HAVE TO go down at least 2 hook sizes – if you used a 4,00 mm you will need to use a 3, 50 mm OR 3, 25 mm!!
The reason – when working straight squares or rectangles like these to make them line up and match the size of your squares to which you intend on joining them – if you use the same hook size the rectangles are much larger – this is due to the tension – squares because they are worked in the round are ‘tighter’. Squares/rectangles worked in rows are ‘looser’.

I used a 3, 50 mm for my rectangles and I should have a used a 3, 25 mm – due to the fact that I crochet loosely.
But once blocked the squares fit the rectangle!

With yarn – CH 84

ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 2: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 DC into each SC until end; (83 DC); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 4: CH 3 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 TR into each SC until end; (83 TR); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 5: CH 1; work 1 SC into each TR until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 6: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 DC into each SC until end; (83 DC); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 7: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 8: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 DC into each SC until end; (83 DC); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 9: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 10: CH 3 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 TR into each SC until end; (83 TR); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 11: CH 1; work 1 SC into each TR until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 12: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 DC into each SC until end; (83 DC); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 13: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 14: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 DC into each SC until end; (83 DC); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 15: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 16: CH 3 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 TR into each SC until end; (83 TR); TURN

cut yarn and change color;

ROW 17: CH 1; work 1 SC into each TR until end; (83 SC); TURN
ROW 18: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 DC into each SC until end; (83 DC).
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

If you count the STITCHES you SHOULD have 83 STS. The square should approx measure 18 inches (45 cm)

JOINING:

You need to join your small squares in 4 x 6 inch squares – you can put the types to together OR you can mix and match as you please – my daughter preferred it this way!

TIP: If you crochet tightly – use a hook larger to join your squares – this will help that the square does not ‘pull‘ inward; otherwise use the same hook you made your squares with!
Do not get distracted like I did and use the hook I made my rectangles with – I had to frog!

Method for joining – I used the SLIP STITCH method – I recommend this because we do need our squares approx the same size as our other squares.
You can also sew – yarn and sewing needle (whip stitch) – your squares together.
I do NOT however recommend SINGLE CROCHET or any method that might widen your square.

If you count the STITCHES from corner to corner (2 CH space to 2 CH space) you SHOULD have 25 STS.
(11 STS on each mini square + center JOIN and the CORNER SPACE alongside the the JOIN on each side = 25 STS) The square should approx measure 6 inches (15 cm)
