This Elio Crochet Square is part of the Cassiopeia Crochet Throw that consists of 12 unique star, sun and moon designs, each design made twice to complete a 24 square throw. Elio – A Spanish name meaning sun also refers to the Latin for the Greek sun-god Helios.

Elio Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 50 – 75 yards (40 – 70 meters)
    (colors listed below in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)

Gauge:
With yarn listed and 3, 50 mm (E) hook final square should measure 7 inches (18 cm).
However gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect but your squares need to be all the same size.

Finished Size:
Squares – 7 inch (18 cm)

Pattern Notes:
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.

Instructions:

With A – Make a magic circle/or CH 6; SL ST to form a circle.

RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into any DC with a STANDING DC/or CH 3 (counts as 1 DC).

RND 2: Work 1 DC into SAME DC; (work 2 DC into next DC) x 11;
SL ST into STANDING DC or into 3rd of 3 CH. (24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into any DC with a STANDING DC/or CH 3 (counts as 1 DC).

RND 3: Work 1 DC into SAME DC; work 1 FPDC around next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around next DC.** Repeat from * to ** all around. SL ST into STANDING DC or into 3rd of 3 CH. (36 STS = 12 FPDC; 24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into any DC after a FPDC with a STANDING DC/or CH 3 (counts as 1 DC).

RND 4: Work 1 DC into SAME DC; work 1 FPDC around next DC; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC. *Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around next DC; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC.**  Repeat from * to ** all around. SL ST into STANDING DC or into 3rd of 3 CH. (48 STS = 24 FPDC; 24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join into any ST.

RND 5: Work 1 SC into each ST all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (48 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into any SC with a SL ST.

Special Stitch for this round – Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from CH.

RND 6: Work [1 SC; 1 HDC] into SAME SC; work [1 DC; 1 TR] into next SC; Picot; work {1 TR; 1 DC] into next SC; work [1 HDC; 1 SC] into next SC. *Work [1 SC; 1 HDC] into next SC; work [1 DC; 1 TR] into next SC; Picot; work {1 TR; 1 DC] into next SC; work [1 HDC; 1 SC] into next SC.** Repeat from * to ** 10 more times. (12 Petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into FIRST SC of a Petal.

RND 7: Work 1 SC into first SC; CH 4; SL ST into top of Picot; CH 4; work 1 SC into next SC. *Work 1 SC into next SC; CH 4; SL ST into top of Picot; CH 4; work 1 SC into next SC.** Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into first SC worked. Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into space BETWEEN any 2 SC (first and last SC of the Petals)

RND 8: Work 1 SC into space; CH 4; work 1 SC into 4 CH space; CH 2; work 1 SC into next 4 CH space; CH 4. *Work 1 SC into next space between 2 SC; CH 4; work 1 SC into 4 CH space; CH 2; work 1 SC into next 4 CH space; CH 4.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Squaring:

With A – join into any 2 CH worked over a picot of a petal.

RND 9: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [1 TR; CH 3; 2 TR] into same 2 CH space; (CH 6; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space) x 2; CH 6. *Work [2 TR; CH 3; 2 TR] into next 2 CH space; (CH 6; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space) x 2; CH 6. Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.

RND 10: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work 1 TR into next TR; work [2 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into next 3 CH space; work 1 TR into next 2 TR;  (work 4 TR into 6 CH space; work 1 TR into next SC ) x 2; work 4 TR into 6 CH space. *Work 1 TR into next 2 TR; work [2 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into next 3 CH space; work 1 TR into next 2 TR;  (work 4 TR into 6 CH space; work 1 TR into next SC) x 2; work 4 TR into 6 CH space.** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH. (88 TR)

RND 11: CH 1; work 1 SC into next 4 TR; *work [1 SC; CH 1; 1 SC] into 3 CH corner space; work 1 SC into each of next TR until next corner.** Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
