Orion Crochet Square
– Free Crochet Pattern –
This Orion Crochet Square is part of the Cassiopeia Crochet Throw that consists of 12 unique star, sun and moon designs, each design made twice to complete a 24 square throw. Orion – the name means Rising in the Sky. The constellation Orion contains three conspicuous stars.

Orion Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 50 – 75 yards (40 – 70 meters)
(colors listed below in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light. - Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
Gauge:
With yarn listed and 3, 50 mm (E) hook final square should measure 7 inches (18 cm).
However gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect but your squares need to be all the same size.
Finished Size:
Squares – 7 inch (18 cm)
Pattern Notes:
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.

Instructions:
With A – Make a magic circle/or CH 6; SL ST to form a circle.
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join into any DC with a STANDING DC/or CH 3 (counts as 1 DC).
RND 2: Work 1 DC into SAME DC; (work 2 DC into next DC) x 11; SL ST into STANDING DC or into 3rd of 3 CH. (24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends
With C – SL ST into any DC.
Special Stitch for this round – Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from CH.
RND 3: Work [1 HDC; 1 DC] into next DC; work Picot; work [1 DC; 1 HDC] into next DC; SL ST into next DC. *SL ST into next DC; work [1 HDC; 1 DC] into next DC; work Picot; work [1 DC; 1 HDC] into next DC; SL ST into next DC.** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times. (6 x Petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With D – SL ST around any DC post of round 2 and CH 1 and work a SC around same DC post /or do a STANDING BPSC (Back Post Single Crochet)
RND 4: work 1 BPSC around each of next 23 DC; SL ST into first BPSC worked. (24 BPSC)
RND 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME BPSC; work 1 DC into next BPSC. *Work 2 DC into next BPSC; work 1 DC into next BPSC.** Repeat from * to ** 10 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC. *Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.** Repeat from * to ** 11 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (48 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Position the petals that each one corresponds with a DC directly behind it – there will be 7 DC in-between each petal
With A – Special Stitch for this round – First Petal Only – Standing SC:
Make a Slip Stitch onto your hook; insert hook into top of first petal; insert hook into DC; yarn over hook; pull thru both DC and petal – 2 loops on hook; yarn over hook; pull thru both loops.
RND 7: *Work 1 SC into next 7 DC; work 1 SC into both next Petal and DC.** Repeat from * to ** 5 more times; work 1 SC into next 7 DC; SL ST into Standing SC.
RND 8: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME SC; SL ST into next SC; CH 3; work 3DCtog into next SC; CH 3; SL ST into next SC; work 1 SC into next 5 SC. * SL ST into next SC; CH 3; work 3DCtog into next SC; CH 3; SL ST into next SC; work 1 SC into next 5 SC.** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times; SL ST into next SC; CH 3; work 3DCtog into next SC; CH 3; SL ST into next SC; work 1 SC into next 4 SC; SL ST into first SC worked. (30 SC; 6 x Petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join into any SC BEFORE a CH 3 SL ST BEFORE a petal.
Special Stitch for this round – Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from CH.
RND 9: CH 1; work 1 SC into same SC; *SL ST into next SL ST; CH 3; work [1 SC; Picot; 1 SC] into top of next petal; CH 3; SL ST into next SL ST; work 1 SC into next 5 SC.** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times; SL ST into next SL ST; CH 3; work [1 SC; Picot; 1 SC] into top of next petal; CH 3; SL ST into next SL ST; work 1 SC into next 4 SC; SL ST into first SC worked. Fasten off and weave in ends.
With C – join into FIRST SC of a 5 SC group.
RND 10: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME SC; work 1 HDC into next SC; work [1 DC; CH 2; 1 DC] into next SC; work 1 HDC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC; CH 6 – this is positioned behind the next petal; SKIP petal. *Work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 HDC into next SC; work [1 DC; CH 2; 1 DC] into next SC; work 1 HDC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC; CH 6 – this is positioned behind the next petal; SKIP petal.** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
