Cassiopeia Crochet Throw Border – Free Crochet Pattern

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 500 – 600 yards (450 – 550 meters)
    (colors listed below in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Gauge:
With yarn listed and 3, 50 mm (E) hook final square should measure 7 inches (18 cm).
However gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect but your squares need to be all the same size.

Finished Size:
Throw – 32 inch (82 cm) in width; 52 inch (132 cm) in length

Pattern Notes:
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.

Instructions:

Border:

With D1 – join into any 2 CH space.

RND 1: (Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into corner space; *(work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 6 CH) x 5; work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 HDC into next corner space; this part is worked over the join section – work 1 HDC into next CH; work 1 DC into next 2 CH; work 1 TR into join SC; work 1 DC into next 2 CH; work 1 HDC into next CH; work 1 HDC into next 2 CH space.**
Repeat from * to ** until last square of side; omitting the last HDC.) 4 times. SL ST into first SC worked.

RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); # [2 DC; 3 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into next SC;
*(SKIP next SC; work 1 DC into next 6 SC) 5 times. SKIP next SC;*** work 1 DC into each of next 2 HDC; work 1 DC into next DC; work 3DCtog over next (DC; TR; DC); work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into each of next 2 HDC.** Repeat from * to ** until last square; then repeat from * to *** once more.#
Repeat instruction from # to # 3 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join into any 3 CH space.

RND 3: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work [CH 3; 1 HDC] into same corner space; work 1 HDC into each DC until next corner space.
*Work [1 HDC; 3 CH; 1 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into each DC until next corner space.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D2 – join into any 3 CH space.

Note: for the next 2 rounds work into the 3rd loop of each HDC (this is the loop at the back of each ST)

RND 4: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work [CH 3; 1 HDC] into same corner space; work 1 HDC into each DC until next corner space.
*Work [1 HDC; 3 CH; 1 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into each DC until next corner space.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
