The Solomon Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours Tori (cotton yarn) – approx 237,50 yards (217,50 meters);
Approx 100/200 yards of Worsted Medium Weight Yarn (4) – like Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice.
NOTE: these approximates are for the FULL 12 inch square size. - Hook – 6,00 mm (J) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
Pattern Notes:
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.
Changing colours are optional!
Instructions:
With 1st color make a magic ring/or CH 8 and SL ST to form a ring;
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a stitch); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC. (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With 2nd color join into any DC with a STANDING DC/or CH 3 – counts as 1 DC.
RND 2: Work FPDC around joining DC; (work 1 DC into next DC; work FPDC around SAME DC) x 11.
SL ST into first DC worked. (24 STS – 12 DC; 12 FPDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With 3rd color join into any DC with a STANDING DC/or CH 3 – counts as 1 DC.
RND 3: Work 1 DC into joining DC; work FPDC around next FPDC. (Work 2 DC into next DC; work FPDC around next FPDC) x 11. SL ST into first DC worked. (36 STS – 24 DC; 12 FPDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With 4th color join into DC on the RIGHT/Before of a FPDC with a STAND DC/ or CH 3 – counts as 1 DC.
RND 4: CH 2; work FPDC around next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 DC into next DC; (work 1 DC into next DC; CH 2; work FPDC around next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 DC into next DC) x 11. SL ST into first DC worked. (36 STS – 24 DC; 12 FPDC; 24 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With 5th color join into 2 CH space on the RIGHT/Before of a FPDC with a STAND DC/ or CH 3 – counts as 1 DC.
RND 5: work 1 DC into same 2 CH space; CH 2; SKIP FPDC; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; (CH 3; work FPDC around next FPDC) twice; CH 3.
*Work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; CH 2; SKIP FPDC; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; (CH 3; work FPDC around next FPDC) twice; CH 3.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first DC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With 6th color join into any 2 CH corner space with a STANDING HDC/or CH 2 – counts as 1 HDC.
RND 6: work [1 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into same 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 2 DC; (work 1 HDC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 HDC into next FPDC) twice; work 1 HDC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 HDC into next 2 DC.
*Work [2 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 2 DC; (work 1 HDC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 HDC into next FPDC) twice; work 1 HDC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 HDC into next 2 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(19 HDC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Square should measure approximate 6 inches.
NOTE: work into the 3rd loop (back-loop) of each HDC for next 5 ROUNDS (7-11).
With 7th color join into any 2 CH corner space with a STANDING HDC/or CH 2 – counts as 1 HDC.
RND 7: work [2 CH; 1 HDC] into same 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 19 HDC.
*Work [1 HDC; 2 CH; 1 HDC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 19 HDC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(21 HDC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With 8th color join into any 2 CH corner space with a STANDING HDC/or CH 2 – counts as 1 HDC.
RND 8: work [2 CH; 1 HDC] into same 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 21 HDC.
