Crochet Donut Play Food – Free Crochet Pattern

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – MoYa 100% Cotton Double Knit – approx 26/30 yards (24/28 meters); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stuffing – very small amount.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

Gauge:
With yarn listed and 3, 50 mm (E) hook cupcake should approx measure 3, 5 inches in diameter and 1, 5 inches in height all depending on stuffing.  However gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect

Finished Size:
3 ½ inches in diameter and 1 ½ inches in length (9 x 4 cm).

Pattern Notes:
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.

Instructions:

Yarn suggestions – natural, chestnut, chocolate, burnt fudge or sepia.

Donut Base:
This part is made by working in continuous rounds, so you may want to use a stitch marker to keep record of your current rnd – move your maker every time into last stitch worked to designate the end of the round.
Special Stitch:
SC2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together.
With yarn – CH 12. Join with a slip ST to make a ring.
Rnd 1: Work 2 SC into each ST all around (24 SC). Place a stitch marker in the last SC to designate the end of the rnd.
Rnd 2: *Work 2 SC into first ST and 1 SC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (36 SC).
Rnd 3-12: Work 1 SC in each ST all around (36 SC).
Rnd 13: *SC2tog, work 1 SC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (24 SC).
Rnd 14: *SC2tog all around.  (12 SC).
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

How To Assemble:
Sew last row of doughnut to first row, stuff lightly before sewing closed. Weave in ends.

Icing:
This part is made by working in continuous rounds, so you may want to use a stitch marker to keep record of your current rnd – move your maker every time into last stitch worked to designate the end of the round.
With yarn – CH 12. Join with a slip ST to make a ring.
Rnd 1:  Work 1 SC into each ST all around (12 SC). Place a stitch marker in the last SC to designate the end of the rnd.
Rnd 2: Work 2 SC into each ST all around (24 SC).
Rnd 3: *Work 2 SC into first ST and 1 SC into next ST.**  Repeat from * to ** around (36 SC).
Rnd 4-6: Work 1 SC into each ST all around (36 SC).
Rnd 7: *Work SC, HDC, SC, HDC, 2DC, HDC into next six STS.** Repeat from * to ** all  around.
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Finishing:
Embroider French knots/or small random stripes in assorted colors onto the icing. Attach icing to top of doughnut. Weave in all ends.
