Merry Christmas Tree Crochet Gift Bag
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Elle Gold 4 Ply – approx 102 yards (25 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes);
Weight – Fingering (14 wpi - Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
SKILL:
Easy – Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
PATTERN NOTES:
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.
Finished Size:
Approx 8 inch (21 cm) in length and width.
Colors:
- A – Red (40 g)
- B – Green (20 g)
- and oddments for the Embroidery Knots on the tree applique.

Instructions:
Bag – First Part:
With A – CH 31.
ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN.

ROW 2 – 60: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC across; TURN.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Tree Applique:
With B – CH 4;
ROW 1: work 1 DC into 4th CH from hook; CH 1; work 2 DC into 4th CH from hook; TURN.

ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into next DC; work [2 DC; 1 DC; 2 DC] into 1 CH space; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; TURN.

ROW 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work [2 DC; 1 DC; 2 DC] into 1 CH space; work 1 DC into next 4 DC; TURN.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
With some Brown yarn – join in 8th SC;
ROW 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into joining SC; work 1 SC into next 4 SC; TURN.
ROW 2 – 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC; TURN.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With some oddments of colour – embroider some French knots randomly on the tree.
Optional – use ribbons, or buttons.
Sew Tree Applique into position: place tree on the 4th row from the top and sew in place.
Bag – Second Part:
Fold bag in half and with A SC (single crochet) sides together – leaving top open.
With B – join into a side SC:
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
(30 + 30 + 2 Side SC = 62 SC)
RND 2: CH 1 (does NOT count as ST); work 1 HDC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
(62 HDC)
RND 3: work into the BACK-LOOPS – this is the third look of the HDC ST; the one right at the back after the top two – CH 1 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 HDC into each HDC all around; SL ST into first HDC worked.
RND 4: Repeat rnd 3.
Creating The Handle:
RND 5: continue working into BACK-LOOPS – CH 1 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 HDC into next 6 HDC;
CH 15; SKIP next 15 HDC; work 1 HDC into next 12 HDC; CH 15; SKIP next 15 HDC; work 1 HDC into next 6 HDC;
SL ST into first HDC worked.
RND 6: continue working into BACK-LOOPS – CH 1 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 HDC into next 6 HDC;
work 15 HDC into next CH; work 1 HDC into next 12 HDC; work 15 HDC into next CH; work 1 HDC into next 6 HDC;
SL ST into first HDC worked.
(62 HDC)
RND 7-8: Repeat rnd 3.
RND 9: work the Crab Stitch for the final round.
