Mazu Whirl Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

  • A – Natural (6g)
  • B – Sand/Baby Yellow (9g)
  • C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (6g)
  • D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
  • E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (8g)
  • F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (4g)
  • G – Peacock/Aubergine (9g)

Instructions:

NOTE:
RNDS 3 – 7 will cause the center to twist slightly – this is correct!

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC.

RND 3: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 4 DC; work [1 DC; CH 12; 1 DC] into next DC.
*Work 1 DC into next 5 DC; work [1 DC; CH 12; 1 DC] into next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(7 DC on each side = 28 DC; 4 x 12 CH loops)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into corner DC BEFORE a loop.

RND 4: CH 3; work 1 DC into SAME DC; CH 12; work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 5 DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; CH 12; work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 5 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(9 DC on each side = 36 DC; 4 x 12 CH loops)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into corner DC BEFORE a loop.

RND 5: CH 3; work 1 DC into SAME DC; CH 12; work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 7 DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; CH 12; work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 7 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(11 DC on each side = 44 DC; 4 x 12 CH loops)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join F into FIRST DC AFTER a loop.

Note: BEFORE beginning next round; Pull 2nd loop from BACK to FRONT through 1st loop.

RND 6: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 10 DC; work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next 2nd loop.
*Work 1 DC into next 11 DC; work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next 2nd loop.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(15 DC on each side = 60; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: BEFORE beginning next round; Pull 3rd loop from BACK to FRONT through 2nd loop.

Join G into any 3rd loop.

RND 7: CH 1; work 3 HDC into loop; work 1 HDC into next 15 DC.
* Work 3 HDC into next loop; work 1 HDC into next 15 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(15 HDC on each side = 60; 3 HDC into each corner)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 2nd corner HDC.

Special Stitch:
Puff ST:  (Yarn over; insert hook into SAME HDC; yarn over pull through ) x 4 times; yarn over; pull through all loops on hook; CH 1 to lock.

RND 8: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into SAME ST ; CH 1; SKIP next HDC; work (Puff ST; CH 1; SKIP next HDC) x 8 times.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next HDC; CH 1; SKIP next HDC; work (Puff ST; CH 1; SKIP next HDC) x 8 times.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(8 Puff STS on each side; 9 x 1 CH spaces; 4 x corners = 4 DC; 2 CH)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 9: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same corner; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; (1 TR into SKIPPED RND 7 HDC; CH 1; SKIP Puff ST) x 8 times; work 1 TR into SKIPPED RND 7 HDC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.
* work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same corner; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; (1 TR into SKIPPED RND 7 HDC; CH 1; SKIP Puff ST) x 8 times; work 1 TR into SKIPPED RND 7 HDC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times.
(9 TR; 8 x 1 CH spaces; 8 DC on each side; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: when working the DC into the SKIPPED Puff ST work into the 1 CH you made to lock the ST.

RND 10: CH 1; work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into same corner; work 1 SC into next 5 STS; (work 1 DC into SKIPPED Puff ST; work 1 SC into next TR) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next 4 STS.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next corner; work 1 SC into next 5 STS; (work 1 DC into SKIPPED Puff ST; work 1 SC into next TR) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next 4 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times;
SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 DC; 19 SC  = 27 STS on each side; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 11: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same corner; work 1 DC into next 6 SC; (CH 1; SKIP next DC; work 1 DC into next SC) x 8 times; work 1 DC into next 5 SC.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner; work 1 DC into next 6 SC; (CH 1; SKIP next DC; work 1 DC into next SC) x 8 times; work 1 DC into next 5 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(23 DC; 8 x 1 CH spaces = 31 on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 12: CH 1; work [2 SC; 2 CH; 2 SC] into same corner; work 1 SC into next 8 STS; (work 1 DC into SKIPPED DC of RND 10; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next 7 STS.
*Work [2 SC; 2 CH; 2 SC] into next corner; work 1 SC into next 8 STS; (work 1 DC into SKIPPED DC of RND DC; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next 7 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times;
SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 DC; 27 SC  = 35 STS on each side; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.

RND 13: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
