Flower Star Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

  • A – Natural (5g)
  • B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
  • C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (4g)
  • D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
  • E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
  • F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
  • G – Peacock/Aubergine (7g)

Instructions:

Please Note: Overlay Section is optional.

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC.

RND 3: CH 1; work 1 SC; CH 4; SKIP next 2 DC.
*Work 1 SC into next DC; CH 4; SKIP next 2 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 SC; 8 x 4 CH spaces)

RND 4: SL ST into next 2 CH STS; SL ST into CH space; CH 5 – this counts as 1 DC and 2 CH space; work (2DCtog; CH 1) x3 times into next 4 CH space; work 2DCtog into SAME 4 CH space; CH 2.
*Work 1 DC into next 4 CH space; CH 2; work (2DCtog; CH 1) x3 times into next 4 CH space; work 2DCtog into SAME 4 CH space; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 5 CH.
(4 DC; 8 x 2 CH spaces; 16 x 2DCtog; 12 x 1 CH spaces = 20 STS not including CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH space AFTER a DC.

RND 5: CH 1, work 2 SC into CH space; (work 1 SC into next 2DCtog; work 1 SC into 1 CH space) x 3 times; work 1 SC into next 2DCtog; work 2 SC into next 2 CH space; SKIP next DC; CH 2.
*Work 2 SC into next 2 CH space; (work 1 SC into next 2DCtog; work 1 SC into 1 CH space) x 3 times; work 1 SC into next 2DCtog; work 2 SC into next 2 CH space; SKIP next DC; CH 2.
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(44 SC; 4 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into any 2 CH space.

RND 6: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR): work [1 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into same space; CH 1; SKIP next SC; work 1 TR into next SC;
CH 1; SKIP next SC; work 1 DC into next SC;
CH 1; SKIP next SC; work 1 HDC  into next SC;
CH 1; SKIP next SC; work 1 DC into next SC;
CH 1; SKIP next SC; work 1 TR into next SC;
CH 1; SKIP next SC.
*Work [2 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into same space; CH 1; SKIP next SC; work 1 TR into next SC;

Join F into any 2 CH space.

RND 7: CH 1; work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 9 STS and 6 CH spaces.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 9 STS and CH spaces.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(17 SC on each side = 60 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 2 CH space.

RND 8: CH 3; work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into space; SKIP next 2 SC; (CH 1; work 1 DC into next SC; SKIP next SC) x 7 times; CH 1; SKIP next 2 SC.
* Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into space; SKIP next 2 SC; (CH 1; work 1 DC into next SC; SKIP next SC) x 7 times; CH 1; SKIP next 2 SC.**

Join A into any 2 CH space.

RND 9: CH 1; work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 2 DC; (work 1 TR into SKIPPED RND 6 SC; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next DC.

Join B into any 2 CH space.

(27 DC on each side = 108 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 2 CH space.

RND 11: CH 1; work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 27 DC.
*Work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 27 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(31 SC on each side = 124 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends

Join D into any 2 CH space.

RND 12: CH 1; work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 31 SC.
*Work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 31 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(33 SC on each side = 132 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends

Join E into any 2 CH space.

RND 13: CH 1; work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 33 SC.

Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(35 SC on each side = 140STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.

RND 14: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Overlay Crochet Section:
Note:
you will be working on top of your square.

With F join over SC before a RND 3 4 CH where a DC has been worked into the 4 CH space by inserting your hook from front to back, then back to front around the SC post.

Continue as follows:
* CH 4; SL ST into DC worked into 4 CH; CH 4; work SC around next RND 3 SC post; CH 4; work SC around RND 6 HDC post; CH 4; work SC around next RND 3 SC post.**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times.
SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and pull your yarn ends to the back of the square and weave in.
You will have 8 x petals.
