Hip Granny Square Throw Cushion

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy to Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).

The squares are the most complex to make for this project.

Cushion – simple construction, joining, shaping and finishing.

Supplies/Materials:

Yarn –Moya 100% Cotton Double Knit (cotton yarn).
Weight – DK (11 wpi) Approx. – 592 yards (540 m)
Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – Clover
Scissors
Yarn needle
Optional – velcro/zipper or buttons

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
RS – right side
WS- wrong side

Gauge:
Not necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and/or hook sizing will differ.
Using the SAME hook and yarn will ensure your squares are consistent in size.

Approx. 14 inches (36 cm) in width and length

A – Natural 1 x 50g
B – Butternut 1 x 50g
C – Pomegranate 1 x 50g
D – Kiwi 1 x 50g

Instructions:

Squares:
Make 1 of each square design = 6 Squares.
Hip Raised Circle Granny Square
Hip Fancy Circle Granny Square
Hip Fan Circle Granny Square
Hip Wagon Circle Granny Square
Hip Cluster Circle Granny Square
Hip Cluster Flower Granny Square

With A – join into any corner Popcorn SC of any square Note: Repeat this round for all 6 squares.

RND 1: *Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into Popcorn SC; work 1 SC into each of next 25 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; SL ST into first SC worked. (27 SC on each side = 108 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join four of the squares together using the SL ST method to form a larger square.
Join two squares together using the SL ST method to for a rectangle.

Large Square:

With B – join into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 1: Work Starting Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 DC into next 26 SC; work 4DCtog over next (SC; 2 CH space; join; 2 CH space; 1 SC); work 1 DC into next 26 SC; CH 1.
*Work Popcorn into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 DC into next 26 SC; work 4DCtog over next (SC; 2 CH space; join; 2 CH space; 1 SC); work 1 DC into next 26 SC; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into top of Starting Popcorn.
(4 corner Popcorns; 53 DC = [212 STS excluding corner Popcorns])
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into any FIRST DC of any side;

RND 2: *Work 1 SC into each ST until 1 CH space; work 1 SC into 1 CH space; work 1 FPSC around Popcorn; work 1 SC into 1 CH space.** Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(53 SC on each side = 212 SC; 4 corner FPSC; 8 corner SC = 224 STS in total)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D– join into any corner FPSC

RND 3: Work Starting Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 DC into next 55 SC; CH 1.
*Work Popcorn into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 DC into next 55 SC; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into top of Starting Popcorn.
(4 corner Popcorns; 55 DC = [220 STS excluding corner Popcorns])
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join into any FIRST DC of any side;

RND 4: *Work 1 SC into each ST until 1 CH space; work 1 SC into 1 CH space; work 1 FPSC around Popcorn; work 1 SC into 1 CH space.** Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(55 SC on each side = 220 SC; 4 corner FPSC; 8 corner SC = 232 STS in total)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat instructions from RND 1 – RND 4 for Rectangle.

RND 1: (4 corner Popcorns; 53 DC long sides; 25 DC short sides = [158 STS excluding corner Popcorns])

RND 2: (158 SC; 4 corner FPSC; 8 corner SC = 170 STS in total)

RND 3: (4 corner Popcorns; 55 DC long sides; 28 DC short sides = [166 STS excluding corner Popcorns])

RND 4: (166 SC; 4 corner FPSC; 8 corner SC = 178 STS in total)

Back Bottom:

With A – join into FIRST SC of any side of the Large Square (your preference for how you would like your squares positioned.)

Note: CH 2 at the start of each row counts as 1 DC – (the 2 CH gives a neater edge.)

ROW 1: CH 2; work 1 DC into next 54 SC; TURN (55 DC)
ROW 2 – 10: repeat row 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into first DC of ROW 10.

ROW 11 – 15: repeat row 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into first DC of ROW 15.

ROW 16 – 17: repeat row 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into first DC of 17.

ROW 18: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC across. Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join sides together with the SL ST method evenly over 26 STS to the large square.

Back Top:

Join rectangle with the SL ST method evenly to the large square. (26 STS; 1 corner STS; 55 STS; 1 corner STS; 26 STS)

With B – join into first FPSC of the bottom exposed edge of rectangle.

ROW 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC across. (55 SC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into first SC of ROW 1.

ROW 2: CH 1; 2 SC into first SC; work 1 SC into each DC across. (56 SC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into first SC of ROW 2.

Picot Edging:
Picot – CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook.

ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into first SC; Picot; *work 1 SC into next 2 SC; Picot.**
Repeat from * to ** 28 times; work 1 SC into last SC.  (29 Picots) Fasten off and weave ends.

Finishing:
I added a Velcro strip for my back opening. Optional – add press buttons; snap buttons or a zipper.
