Hip Granny Square Table Runner
Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy to Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.
You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
The squares are the most complex to make for this project.
Table Runner– simple construction, joining, shaping, and finishing.
Supplies/Materials:
Yarn –Moya 100% Cotton Double Knit (cotton yarn).
Weight – DK (11 wpi) Approx. – 1036 yards (945 m)
Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – Clover
Scissors
Yarn needle
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
RS – right side
WS- wrong side
Gauge:
Not necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and/or hook sizing will differ.
Using the SAME hook and yarn will ensure your squares are consistent in size.
Size:
Approx. 53 inches (135 cm) in length and 12 inches (31 cm) in width – when blocked.
Colors:
A – Sherbet 1 x 50g
B – Marigold 2 x 50g
C – Azure 2 x 50g
D – Lagoon 2 x 50g

Instructions:
Squares:
Make 1 of each square design = 6 Squares.
Hip Butterfly Lace Granny Square
Hip Gothic Lace Granny Square
Hip Victorian Lace Granny Square
Hip Popcorn Lace Granny Square
Hip Wheel Lace Granny Square
Hip Seville Lace Granny Square
With B – join into any corner popcorn FPSC.
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same FPSC; work 1 DC into each of next 25 SC.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next FPSC; work 1 DC into each of next 25 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** two more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Repeat RND 1 for all 6 squares – then continue as follows:
With C – join into any 2 CH corner space.
Square 1:
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into same 2 CH space; CH1; (SKIP next 2 DC; work 3 DC into next DC; CH 1) x 9 times.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH space; CH1; (SKIP next 2 DC; work 3 DC into next DC; CH 1) x 9 times.** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Square 2 – 6:
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into same 2 CH space; CH1; (SKIP next 2 DC; work 3 DC into next DC; CH 1) x 9 times.
Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH space; CH1; (SKIP next 2 DC; work 3 DC into next DC; CH 1) x 9 times.
Joining to first square or /2nd/3rd/4th/5th:
Work [3 DC; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner of previous square; 3 DC]; SKIP next 2 DC; SL ST into opposite CH 1 space of previous square; (work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP next 2 DC; SL ST into opposite CH 1 space of precious square) x 9 times.
Work [3 DC; SL ST into opposite corner of previous square; CH 1; 3 DC]; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1; (work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1;) x 9 times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(33 DC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Border:
With D – join into any 2 CH corner space at the start of a LONG side.
Note: For this next round all 1 CH spaces are SKIPPED.
RND 1: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work [1 HDC; CH 2; 2 HDC] into 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into each of next 33 DC; work 1 HDC into next 2 CH corner space; SKIP join.
*Work 1 HDC into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 33 DC; work 1 HDC into next 2 CH corner space; SKIP join.** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times;
#Work [2 HDC; CH 2; 2 HDC] into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 33 DC.##
Work 2 HDC; CH 2; 2 HDC into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 33 HDC; work 1 HDC into next 2 CH corner space; SKIP join. Repeat from * to ** 5 times more.
Repeat from # to ## once more; SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Note: For the next 6 rounds – work into the 3rd loop (back-loop) of each HDC.
With A – join into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 2: CH 2; work [1 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into 2 CH corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.
*Work [2 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join into any 2 CH space – RND 3: Repeat RND 2.
With C – join into any 2 CH space – RND 4: Repeat RND 2.
With D – join into any 2 CH space – RND 5: Repeat RND 2.
With A – join into any 2 CH space – RND 6: Repeat RND 2.
With B – join into any 2 CH space – RND 7: Repeat RND 2.
Short Side Border:
Repeat instructions for both sides.
With C – join into FIRST HDC.
ROW 1: Work 1 HDC into each HDC across. (55 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Special Stitch:
Bobble – CH 4; work 3DCtog into 4th CH from hook; SL ST into 4th CH from hook.
With D – join with a SL ST into first HDC; work 1 SC into next HDC; work [1 DC; 1 TR; Bobble; 1 TR; 1 DC] into next HDC; work 1 SC into next HDC; work SL ST into next HDC.
*Work SL ST into next HDC; work 1 SC into next HDC; work [1 DC; 1 TR; Bobble; 1 TR; 1 DC] into next HDC; work 1 SC into next HDC; work SL ST into next HDC.**
Repeat from * to ** 9 more times.
