Abbreviations:  US Terminology

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Special Stitches:

HDC Starting Popcorn:

• CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 4 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
• Drop the loop from your hook.
• Insert your hook from front to back under the 2^nd CH of 2 CH.
• Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the chain.

5 HDC Popcorn:

• Work 5 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
• Drop the loop from your hook.
• Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first half double crochet of the group.
• Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Crochet Popcorn Stitch:

Starting Popcorn:

• CH 3 – this counts as your FIRST DC.
• Work 4 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
• Drop the loop from your hook.
• Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
• Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Popcorn:

• Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
• Drop the loop from your hook.
• Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
• Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Front-Post Double-Crochet (FPDC):

• Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches.
• The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
• Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
• You now have 3 loops on the hook.
• Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice.
• One front post double crochet (FPDC) is complete.

How to Work Front-Post Treble-Crochet (FPTR):

• Yarn over twice and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches or according to the instructions in the pattern.
• The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
• Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
• You now have 4 loops on the hook.
• [Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook] x 3 times.
• One front post treble crochet (FPTR) is complete.

How to Work a Long Treble:

• Yarn over twice and insert your hook into stitch indicated in the pattern instructions.
• Yarn over and draw loop through.
• Pull loop up to be level with your current round, keep tension loose – 4 loops on hook.

(Note – if you pull your loop too tightly it will wrap your stiches below.)

• Complete stitch – [Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook] x 3 times.
• One Long Treble is complete.

Instructions:

With A – make a magic circle /or CH 6; SL ST into first CH to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch); work 16 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.
(16 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into any DC.

RND 2: Work Starting HDC Popcorn (special stitches); CH 2; SKIP next DC.
*Work HDC Popcorn (special stitches) into next DC; CH 2; SKIP next DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into top of starting HDC Popcorn.
(8 HDC Popcorns; 8 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into any 2 CH space.

RND 3: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 4 DC into same 2 CH space; CH 1.
*Work 5 DC into next 2 CH space; CH 1. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(8 x 1 CH spaces; 40 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into FIRST DC of a 5 DC group (DC after a 1 CH space).

RND 4: CH 2 (counts as HDC); work 1 HDC into next DC; work HDC Popcorn into next DC; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; work 1 FPTR (special stitches) around HDC Popcorn directly below (RND 2).
*Work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; work HDC Popcorn into next DC; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; work 1 FPTR around HDC Popcorn directly below (RND 2). **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into 2^nd of 2 CH.
(8 HDC Popcorns; 8 x FPTR; 32 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Squaring:

With E – join into any HDC Popcorn.

RND 5: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 1; 3 TR] into SAME HDC Popcorn; CH 2; work 1 FPDC (special stitches) around next FPTR; CH 2; work 1 SC into next HDC Popcorn; CH 2; work FPDC around next FPTR; CH 2.
*Work [3 TR; CH 1; 3 TR] into next HDC Popcorn; CH 2; work 1 FPDC around next FPTR; CH 2; work 1 SC into next HDC Popcorn; CH 2; work FPDC around next FPTR; CH 2. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 4^th of 4 CH.

With F – join into any 1 CH corner space.

RND 7: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 4 DC into SAME space; work 1 FPDC around each of next 17 TR. *Work 5 DC into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 FPDC around each of next 17 TR. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(17 FPDC on each side = 68 FPDC; 5 DC in each corner = 20 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join into the CENTER (3^rd DC) of a corner 5 DC group.

RND 8: Work Starting HDC Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; work 1 HDC into each of next 17 FPDC; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; CH 1.
*Work HDC Popcorn into next DC (this will be the 3^rd DC of a corner 5 DC group); CH 1; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; work 1 HDC into each of next 17 FPDC; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 DC; CH 1. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into top of Starting HDC Popcorn.
(21 HDC on each side; 8 x 1 CH spaces; 4 x HDC Popcorns)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: For the following rounds 9-15 work into the 3^rd Loop of each HDC.

With B – join into the top of any HDC Popcorn.

RND 9: Work Starting HDC Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; work 1 HDC into each of next 21 HDC; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; CH 1.
*Work HDC Popcorn into top of next HDC Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; work 1 HDC into each of next 21 HDC; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into top of Starting HDC Popcorn.
(23 HDC on each side; 8 x 1 CH spaces; 4 x HDC Popcorns)

With C – join into the top of any HDC Popcorn.

RND 10: Work Starting HDC Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; work 1 HDC into each of next 23 HDC; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; CH 1.
*Work HDC Popcorn into top of next HDC Popcorn; CH 1; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; work 1 HDC into each of next 23 HDC; work 1 HDC into 1 CH space; CH 1.**
