The Appliques:
The Birdy Applique
Colors:
- A – Princess Turquoise (10 g – 5 g per birdy)
- B – Raspberry (3 g – 1 g per tail feather; 1 g for wing)
- C – Dark Purple (3 g – 1 g per tail feather; 1 g for wing; smaller amount for flower embroidery)
- D – Peacock (2 g for eyelid)
- E – Baby Yellow (1 g for beak; 1 g for flowers)
- F – Pale Lilac (2 g for flowers)
- G – Natural (1 g for eye, plus smaller amount for embroidery)
- H – Black (4 g for legs and eye embroidery)
Body – Make 2
With A and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.
(12 DC)
RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 2nd CH of 2 CH.
(24 DC)
RND 3: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME DC; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times
(24 DC).
*Work 2 HDC into next DC; work 1 HDC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 3 more times
(12 HDC); SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.

RND 4: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 1 HDC into ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS.

Tail Feathers – Make 6
- 3 x color B
- 3 x color C
With B/C and 3, 50 mm hook CH 11
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from; work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 HDC into each of next 3 CH;
work 1 DC into each of next 4 CH; work 6 DC into last CH; continue working in the round –
work 1 DC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 HDC into next 3 CH; work 1 SC into next 2 CH; work 1 SL ST into each of next 2 CH.
(24 STS) Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 20 cm)
Wing – Make 2
- 1 x color B
- 1 x color C
With B/C and 3, 50 mm hook make a magic circle/or CH 4; SL ST to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 2(counts as 1 DC); work 5 DC into ring; TURN.

RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 2 DC into each DC across; TURN

Eye – Make 2
With G and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

With H – embroider pupil onto eye.

ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME DC; work 2 SC into each DC across.
Do NOT Turn.

Work 6 SC evenly across; SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 15 cm)
Feet – Make 2
With H and 3, 50 mm hook – CH 6
Work 1 SL ST into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SL ST into each of next 4 CH.
Toes – *CH 3; SL ST into into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SL ST into next 2 CH. **
Repeat from * to ** two more times.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 10 cm)
Flower – Make 2
With E and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST);
work 12 DC into ring.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.
With F – join into any DC.
Note: for this round work into back loops only.

Beaded Flower – Make 2
With A and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional – weave in 12 small beads with the next color before continuing with round 2.
For this next round – work into back loops only.
With B join into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); position bead against hook; work 1 DC into SAME DC.
*Work 1 DC into next DC; position bead against hook; work 1 DC into SAME DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

Slip Stitch Flower – Make 2
With D and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.
With A join into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 1: CH 2(counts as 1 DC); work 5 DC into ring; TURN.

RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 2 DC into each DC across; TURN

The Long Stems – Make 4 (2 x G and 2 x H)

The Short Stems – Make 2 (1 x G and 1 x H)
With G/H CH 16.
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end. (15 SC)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 15 cm)
Leaves – Make 10 (5 x G and 5 x H)
Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook
With G/H CH 7

Constructing the Squares:
Use the images below to build the squares.
Using a sewing needle and the long tails – sew the appliques into place.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
