The Appliques:

The Birdy Applique

Colors:

• A – Princess Turquoise (10 g – 5 g per birdy)
• B – Raspberry (3 g – 1 g per tail feather; 1 g for wing)
• C – Dark Purple (3 g – 1 g per tail feather; 1 g for wing; smaller amount for flower embroidery)
• D – Peacock (2 g for eyelid)
• E – Baby Yellow (1 g for beak; 1 g for flowers)
• F – Pale Lilac (2 g for flowers)
• G – Natural (1 g for eye, plus smaller amount for embroidery)
• H – Black (4 g for legs and eye embroidery)

Body – Make 2

With A and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.
(12 DC)

RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 2^nd CH of 2 CH.
(24 DC)

RND 3: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME DC; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times
(24 DC).
*Work 2 HDC into next DC; work 1 HDC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 3 more times
(12 HDC); SL ST into 2^nd of 2 CH.
(24 DC + 12 HDC = 36 STS)

RND 4: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 1 HDC into ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS.
*Work 2 HDC into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times (32 HDC).
*Work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into next 2 STS. ** Repeat from * to ** 3 more time

RND 5: Optional – mark SL ST with a Stitch Marker.

With E join into FIRST TR of 4 TR group.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tail Feathers – Make 6

• 3 x color B
• 3 x color C

With B/C and 3, 50 mm hook CH 11

Work 1 SC into 2^nd CH from; work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 HDC into each of next 3 CH;
work 1 DC into each of next 4 CH; work 6 DC into last CH; continue working in the round –
work 1 DC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 HDC into next 3 CH; work 1 SC into next 2 CH; work 1 SL ST into each of next 2 CH.
(24 STS) Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 20 cm)

Wing – Make 2

• 1 x color B
• 1 x color C

With B/C and 3, 50 mm hook make a magic circle/or CH 4; SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2(counts as 1 DC); work 5 DC into ring; TURN.
(6 DC)

RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 2 DC into each DC across; TURN
(12 DC)

RND3: CH 1; work 2 SC into first DC; work 1 SC into next DC. *Work 2 SC into next DC; work 1 SC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times. Do NOT Turn.
(18 SC)

Work 9 SC evenly across; SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 20 cm)

Optional: With G – embroider some detail.

Eye – Make 2

With G and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 15 cm)

With H – embroider pupil onto eye.

Eyelid – Make 2

With D and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

ROW 1: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 7 DC into ring; TURN.
(8 DC)

ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME DC; work 2 SC into each DC across.
Do NOT Turn.
(16 SC)

Work 6 SC evenly across; SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 15 cm)

Feet – Make 2

With H and 3, 50 mm hook – CH 6

Work 1 SL ST into 2^nd CH from hook; work 1 SL ST into each of next 4 CH.
Toes – *CH 3; SL ST into into 2^nd CH from hook; work 1 SL ST into next 2 CH. **
Repeat from * to ** two more times.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 10 cm)

Flower – Make 2

With E and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST);
work 12 DC into ring.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With F – join into any DC.

Note: for this round work into back loops only.

RND 2: *Work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC] into next DC; work [1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into next DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 5 more times; SL ST into DC below first SC worked.
(6 Petals) Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 20 cm)

Beaded Flower – Make 2

With A and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional – weave in 12 small beads with the next color before continuing with round 2.

For this next round – work into back loops only.

With B join into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); position bead against hook; work 1 DC into SAME DC.
*Work 1 DC into next DC; position bead against hook; work 1 DC into SAME DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC; 12 Beads) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C join into any DC before a bead (only applies if beads were used).

RND 3: Work Starting Popcorn (special stitches); CH 1; work 1 DC into next DC; CH 1.
*Work Popcorn (special stitches) into next DC; CH 1; work 1 DC into next DC; CH 1. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into top of starting popcorn.
(12 Popcorn; 12 DC; 24 x CH 1 spaces)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 30 cm)

Slip Stitch Flower – Make 2

With D and 3, 50 mm hook – make a magic circle/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A join into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)

RND 3: CH 1; work 2 SC into same DC; work 1 SC into next DC.

With E work Slip Stitches in the center of flower and just beneath the SC stitches of RND 3.

Tulip – Make 2

With F and 3, 50 mm hook make a magic circle/or CH 4; SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2(counts as 1 DC); work 5 DC into ring; TURN.
(6 DC)

RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 2 DC into each DC across; TURN
(12 DC)

RND3: CH 1; work 2 SC into first DC; work 1 SC into next DC. *Work 2 SC into next DC; work 1 SC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times. Do NOT Turn.
(18 SC)

Work 9 SC evenly across; SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 20 cm)

Join I / J into FIRST SC.

Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3^rd CH from hook

Work 1 SC; work [1 DC; Picot; 1 DC] into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC.
*Work 1 SC into next SC; [1 DC; Picot; 1 DC] into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC.**

The Leaves & Stems

The Long Stems – Make 4 (2 x G and 2 x H)

With G/H CH 21.

Work 1 SC into 2^nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end. (20 SC)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 20 cm)

The Short Stems – Make 2 (1 x G and 1 x H)

With G/H CH 16.

Work 1 SC into 2^nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end. (15 SC)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 15 cm)

Leaves – Make 10 (5 x G and 5 x H)

Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3^rd CH from hook

With G/H CH 7

Work 1 SC into 2^nd from hook; work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 DC into next CH; work 6 DC into last CH – continue in the round – work 1 DC into next CH; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 SC into next CH; SL ST into next CH; make a Picot; SL ST into first SC worked. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing (approx. 15 cm)

Constructing the Squares:

Use the images below to build the squares.

Using a sewing needle and the long tails – sew the appliques into place.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
