CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)

Special Stitches:

How to Work 3 Double Crochet Together (3DCtog):

  • Work 3 double crochet into space or single ST, holding the last loop of each double crochet on the hook.
  • Yarn over and pull the yarn through all four loops on the hook.

HDC Starting Popcorn:

  • CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 4 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the 2nd CH of 2 CH.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the chain.

5 HDC Popcorn:

  • Work 5 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first half double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Crochet Popcorn Stitch:

Starting Popcorn:

  • CH 3 – this counts as your FIRST DC.
  • Work 4 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Popcorn:

  • Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Front-Post Double-Crochet (FPDC):

  • Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches.
  • The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice.
  • One front post double crochet (FPDC) is complete.

How to Work Front-Post Half Double-Crochet (FPHDC):

  • Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches or according to the instructions in the pattern.
  • The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
  • One front post half double crochet (FPHDC) is complete.

Instructions:

Side Panel One:

With E and 3,50 mm hook – join into the corner space of a Design One Square.

Note: For the next row work into the 3rd loop of each HDC stitch.

RS – ROW 1: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 1 FPHDC around next HDC Popcorn; work 1 HDC into next FPHDC; work 1 HDC into each of next 95 HDC; work 1 HDC into next FPHDC; work 1 FPHDC around next HDC Popcorn.
Work [1 HDC; CH 3; 1 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 FPHDC around next HDC Popcorn; work 1 HDC into next FPHDC; work 1 HDC into each of next 95 HDC; work 1 HDC into next FPHDC; work 1 FPHDC around next HDC Popcorn; work 1 HDC into next corner space. TURN.
(4 x FPHDC; 97 HDC on each side; 4 corner HDC)

Note: SKIP FIRST FPHDC ON FIRST SIDE AND THE LAST FPHDC ON THE SECOND SIDE

WS – ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into first HDC; work 1 DC into next HDC.
*Work 1 SC into next HDC; work 1 DC into next HDC. **
Repeat from * to ** until corner space; work [1 SC; 3 CH; 1 SC] into corner space; repeat from * to ** once more; work 1 SC into corner HDC. TURN.
(101 STS on each side)

Note: A CH 2 is used at the start for a DC and not a 3 CH – this is for a neater edge.

RS – ROW 3: CH 2 (this counts as 1 DC). *Work 1 SC into next DC; work 1 DC into next SC. **
Repeat from * to ** until corner space; work [1 SC; 3 CH; 1 SC] into corner; work 1 DC into next SC; repeat from * to ** once more. TURN.
(102 STS on each side)

WS – ROW 4: CH 1; work 1 SC into FIRST DC; work 1 DC into next SC.
*Work 1 SC into next DC; work 1 DC into next SC. **
Repeat from * to ** until corner space; work [1 SC; 3 CH; 1 SC] into corner; work 1 DC into next SC; repeat from * to ** once more; work 1 SC into 2nd of 2 CH. TURN.
