Crochet Fairy Wine Bottle Cozy

Difficulty Level | Skills Required

Easy
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.

You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and provided in the instructions.

Materials

  • Hook – 3, 50 mm (E)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Optional – assortment of beads
  • Optional – little red or white bow ties

Yarn:

Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters/130 yards)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.

  • Sunshine
  • Tomato
  • Mint
  • Olive
  • Bottle Green
  • Natural

Yarn Substitute:
Using the same type of yarn throughout the project is recommended. The pattern suggests DK yarn (Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light Worsted), but you are not limited to this type of yarn. Any yarn can be used if you take into consideration your sizing for the project will differ.

Tension | Gauge

Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However COUNTING your stitches will ensure a true success of this project!

Size

Length – tip of curl to foot (straight) approx. 6 inches (15 cm)
Width – wing tip to wing tip approx. 5 inches (13 cm)

Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size your project will be a different size!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Head:

Yarn:

  • Sunshine – make one (hair – back of head)
  • Natural – make one (face)

With yarn – make a magic circle/ or CH 4; join into first CH to form a ring.

Note: it is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the first or last stitch of every round.

RND 1: Work 6 SC into ring.

RND 2: Work 2 SC into each SC all around (12 SC).

RND 3: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around
(18 SC).

RND 4: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (24 SC).

RND 5: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 3 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (30 SC).

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing on the face, weave in all other ends.

Dress:

Yarn:

  • Olive – main dress
  • Bottle Green – trim
  • Mint – frill

With Olive – CH 7

ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (6 SC), TURN.
ROW 2: For this row only work in FRONTLOOPS – CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (6 SC), TURN.
ROW 3 – 4: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (6 SC), TURN.
ROW 5: CH1, work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next 4 SC, work 2 SC into last SC (8 SC), TURN.
ROW 6: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (8 SC), TURN.
ROW 7: CH1, work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next 6 SC, work 2 SC into last SC (8 SC), TURN.
ROW 8: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (10 SC), TURN.
ROW 9: CH1, work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next 8 SC, work 2 SC into last SC (12 SC), TURN.
ROW 10: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (12 SC), TURN.

Frill:

Flip dress around so that the bottom side is facing up – join mint yarn with a SL ST into first exposed loop of ROW 11.
Into first LOOP – work 1 DC, 1 HDC, into next ST – 1 SC, 1 SL ST;
*into next LOOP – 1 SL ST, 1 SC; into next LOOP – 1 HDC, 1 DC;
into next LOOP – 1 DC, 1 HDC; into next LOOP – 1 SC, 1 SL ST. **
Repeat from * to ** one more time;
into next LOOP – 1 SL ST, 1 SC, into next LOOP – 1 HDC, 1 DC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Trim:

Turn dress right side up – join bottle green yarn into first exposed loop of ROW 2 – SL ST into first loop, work 1 SC into same loop, work 2 SC into each loop – work 1 SC and 1 SL ST into last loop

OPTIONAL: Embroider some French Knots onto the dress/ or add some beads – I added ones that looked like little stars.

Wings: (Make 4)

With tomato yarn – CH 11

Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 DC into next 3 CH; work 1 TR into next 5 CH; work 6 TR into last CH – continue along the bottom of the chain – work 1 TR into next 5 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 CH; work 1 SC into last CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

Cozy:
NOTE: This was measured to my wine bottle
Make a CH and fit it around your bottle – remember when you start to make your rows your cozy with measure a bit larger than your original chain – to make your cozy overlap and a few stitches 🙂

With bottle green yarn – CH 46

ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (45 SC), TURN.
ROW 2 – 15: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until each ST until end (45 SC), TURN.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing:

Head:

  • Embroider/glue/or sew eyes, nose and mouth into position on the face.
  • Sew the two back and front head pieces together – stuff with a little bit of stuffing/ fibre fill before closer. (Do not over stuff)
  • With sunshine, weave a few strands to create a fringe.
  • Hair Curls: join yarn with a SL ST, CH 11, work 4 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 4 SC into each CH until end – Repeat for other side.
  • Attach a little bow to one of the curls.

Assembling the Cozy:

  • Sew wings onto cozy as shown in photo.
  • Sew or glue dress over wings.
  • Sew or glue head into position.
  • Arms and Legs:
    There are 2 options to make the arms and legs:
    Use some beads and beading thread to create the arms and legs.
    2. Crochet some single chains and attach them to the fairy.
    Attach yarn just beneath the Trim:
    – Arms CH 13; work 3HDCtog into 3rd CH from hook; SL ST into same CH; SL SC /or SC into remaining CH. Fasten off and weave in ends.
    Attach yarn beneath the Frill:
    – Legs CH 16; work 4HDCtog into 3rd CH from hook; SL ST into same CH; SL SC /or SC into remaining CH. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • Attach press buttons (snap fasteners) to secure the cozy around the bottle/ or crochet some loops and add buttons/ or sew the two short edges together.
