Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Colors:
Approx. – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square

INSTRUCTIONS:

FOUNDATION RING:
CH 7;

RND 1: Work [1 DC and CH 3] 3 times into the 7th CH from hook; join with a SL ST into 3rd of 7CH

RND 2: CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST;
*Work [1 DC, 5 TR, 1 DC] into next 3 CH space (petal made); work 1 SC into next DC. Repeat from * twice more;
Work [1 DC, 5 TR, 1 DC] into next 3 CH space (petal made); change to next color when joining with a SL ST into first SC.

RND 3: CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST;
*Work 1 DC into next DC, work 2 DC into next 2 TR, work 3 DC into next TR, work 2 DC into next 2 TR, work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 SC into next SC.
Repeat from * twice more.
Work 1 DC into next DC, work 2 DC into next 2 TR, work 3 DC into next TR, work 2 DC into next 2 TR, work 1 DC into next DC; join with a SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 4: Join new color into 4th DC of any petal;
CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST;
*CH 5, SKIP next 5 STS, work 1 SC into next DC, CH 5, work 1 SC into 4th DC on next petal. Repeat from * twice more.
CH 5, SKIP next 5 STS, work 1 SC into next DC, CH 5, join with a SL ST into first SC.

RND 5: SL ST into next 5 CH space; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC);
work [3 DC, 3 CH, 4 DC] into same 5 CH space.
*CH 1, work 7 DC into next 5 CH space; CH 1. work [4 DC, 3 CH, 4 DC] into next 5 CH space. Repeat from * twice more.
CH 1, work 7 DC into next 5 CH space; CH 1. join with SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 6: Join new color into 3 CH corner space
CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC), work [1 HDC, 2 CH, 2 HDC] into same space;
* Work 1 HDC into each of next 4 DC, SKIP 1 CH space, work 1 SC into each of next 7 DC, SKIP 1 CH space, work 1 HDC into each of next 4 DC, work [2 HDC, 2 CH, 2 HDC] into next 3 CH corner space.
Repeat from * twice more.
Work 1 HDC into each of next 4 DC, SKIP 1 CH space, work 1 SC into each of next 7 DC, SKIP 1 CH space, work 1 HDC into each of next 4 DC, join with  a SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 7: Join new color into 2 CH corner space
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work [1 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into same space;
*Work 1 DC into each HDC and SC along side of square;
work [2 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space.
Repeat from * twice more.
Work 1 DC into each HDC and SC along side of square; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 8-9: Join new color into 2 CH corner space
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work [1 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into same space;
Work 1 DC into each DC of previous round and work [2 DC, 2 CH 2 DC] into each 2 CH corner. SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 10: Join new color into 2 CH corner space
CH 1, work 3 SC into corner space.
Work 1 SC into each DC of previous round, and work 3 SC into each 2 CH corner space. SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
