This Fold Up Unicorn Play Set Part 1 is part of a super cute fun play set that folds up into a little bag/book with pockets for all the parts.

This play-mat forms the base for the play set – it can fold up into a book. If you add handles it can be a little purse!

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)

Gauge:
Gauge/ Tension is not necessary for this project to be perfect.

Finished Size:
Chevron Stitch Rainbow Themed Play mat – size 14 inch in width and 10 inch in length

Instructions:

With 3, 25 mm (D) Hook and apple green yarn;

CH 73

ROW 1: Work 2 DC into 4^th CH from hook; work 1 DC into next 3 CH; work [3DCtog over next 3 CH] x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 CH. *Work [3 DC into next CH] x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 CH;
work [3DCtog over next 3 CH] x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 CH. Repeat from * until end of row, ending with 3 DC into last CH. TURN

ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into same ST; work 1 DC into next 3 STS; work [3DCtog over next STS] x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 STS;
*Work [3 DC into next STS] x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 STS; work [3DCtog over next 3 STS] x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 STS. Repeat from * until end of row, ending with 3 DC into last ST. TURN

ROW 3 – 20: Repeat row 2

Continue down the side:

Side ROW 1: Work 28 SC across 14 rows

Side ROW 2-9: repeat row 2 of mat instructions.

ROW 10: work 1 SC into each ST across; TURN

ROW 11: CH 1; work 1 SC into next 6 SC; CH 3 – button-loop; SKIP next 3 SC; work 1 SC into next 10 SC; SKIP next 3 SC; work 1 SC into last 6 SC. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

My colour sequence:

Start – apple green; lime; avocado; pale sage; pale blue green; blue canard; sunshine; baby yellow; ballet pink; raspberry; dark purple; lilac and pale lilac.

Attach buttons to back of mat to match the button loops.

Optional: Handles:

With any colour;
Insert hook into the first dip working along the top; CH 30; SL ST into next dip; work 1 SC into same space; TURN work; work 1 HDC into each CH (30 HDC); work 1 SC into dip and fasten off.
SKIP the center dip and Repeat instructions for the second Handle. Weave in ends.
