2025 Crochet A Block Joining

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
RS – right side
WS- wrong side

Gauge:
Not necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and/or hook sizing will differ.
Using the SAME hook and yarn will ensure your squares are consistent in size.

Pattern Notes:
Stitch count is important!
For completing the blanket – correct stitch count will ensure a successful joining of squares

Colors:

  • A – Natural approx 2 balls – 260 yards/ 238 meters

Instructions:

PLEASE NOTE – This is the joining I preferred to keep within the theme of this blanket – THIS JOIN is optional – there are many wonderful joins available that will be suitable of this blanket. ie. SL ST method, Zipper Method.
The only requirement is to ensure to have a 190 DC on each side after joining – 38 DC on each square.

Joining:

Note: squares can be joined in any order – this was my preferred order.

Below is the joining sequence I followed:

Row 1:

  • Join 2 to 1.
  • Join 19 to 2.
  • Join 10 to 19.
  • Join11 to 10.

Row 2:

  • Join 18 to 11.
  • Join 17 to 18 and 10.
  • Join 16 to 17 and 19.
  • Join 15 to 16 and 2.
  • Join 14 to 15 and 1.

Row 3:

  • Join 9 to 18.
  • Join 8 to 9 and 17.
  • Join 3 to 8 and 16.
  • Join 6 to 3 and 15.
  • Join 7 to 6 and 14.

Row 4:

  • Join 24 to 9.
  • Join 23 to 24 and 8.
  • Join 22 to 23 and 3.
  • Join 21 to 22 and 6.
  • Join 20 to 21 and 7.

Row 5:

  • Join 5 to 24.
  • Join 4 to 5 and 23.
  • Join 25 to 4 and 22.
  • Join 12 to 25 and 21.
  • Join 13 to 12 and 20.

The Joining Instructions:

With A – join into any 2 CH corner space of SQUARE 1:

RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

*With A – join into any 2 CH corner space of SQUARE 2/19/10/11:
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
Joining side:

Work 2 DC into corner space; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner space of SQUARE 1/2/19/10;
work as follows –

  • #Yarn over.
  • Insert into DC – current square.
  • Yarn over; pull through.
  • Yarn over; pull through 2 loops.
  • Insert into the back-loop of opposite DC (joining square)
  • Yarn over; pull through 2 loops.
  • Yarn over; pull through last 2 loops. ##

Repeat from # to ## until next corner.

SL ST into corner; CH 1; work 2 DC into corner; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. Fasten off and weave in ends. **

Repeat this process for Squares 19, 10 and 11.

For the FIRST Squares of each row (right side)

*With A – join into any 2 CH corner space of SQUARE 18/9/24/5
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
Joining side:

Work 2 DC into corner space; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner space of SQUARE 11/18/9/24
work as follows –

  • #Yarn over.
  • Insert into DC – current square.
  • Yarn over; pull through.
  • Yarn over; pull through 2 loops.
  • Insert into the back-loop of opposite DC (joining square)
  • Yarn over; pull through 2 loops.
  • Yarn over; pull through last 2 loops. ##

Repeat from # to ## until next corner.

SL ST into corner; CH 1; work 2 DC into corner; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. Fasten off and weave in ends. **

Repeat this process for Squares 9, 24 and 5 separately after completing a row.

For the remaining squares (working from right to left)

*With A – join into any 2 CH corner space of next SQUARE.
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
Joining side:

Work 2 DC into corner space; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner space of opposite SQUARE.
work as follows –

  • #Yarn over.
  • Insert into DC – current square.
  • Yarn over; pull through.
  • Yarn over; pull through 2 loops.
  • Insert into the back-loop of opposite DC (joining square)
  • Yarn over; pull through 2 loops.
  • Yarn over; pull through last 2 loops. ##

Repeat from # to ## until next corner.

SL ST into corner; CH 1; SL ST into corner of next square.
Joining side:
Repeat from # to ## until next corner.

SL ST into corner; work 2 DC into corner; work 1 DC into each of next 34 DC.
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. Fasten off and weave in ends. **

Repeat this process for each remaining square separately to complete a row.
