Little Crochet Red Breasted Robin
Difficulty Level | Skills Required
Easy
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and provided in the instructions.
Materials
- Hook – 3, 00 mm
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Small amount of stuffing/fiberfill
- Optional – safety eyes (small)
Yarn:
Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters/130 yards)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
- A – Antique (579) – approx. 5/9 grams
- B – Brick Red (574) – approx. 2/5 grams
- C – Golden Brown (568) – approx. 5/10 grams
- E – Bottle Green (594) – approx. 2/5 grams
Yarn Substitute:
Using the same type of yarn throughout the project is recommended. The pattern suggests DK yarn (Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light Worsted), but you are not limited to this type of yarn. Any yarn can be used if you take into consideration your sizing for the project will differ.
Tension | Gauge
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However COUNTING your stitches will ensure a true success of this project!
Size
Robin – approx. 5 cm / 2 inches in length (beak to tail/wing to wing)
approx. 3 cm / 1 inch in width (breast to top)
Nest – approx. 7 cm / 3 inches in circumference
Nest depth – approx. 3 cm / 1 inch
Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size your project will be a different size!

INSTRUCTIONS:
Robin – Body:
With A – make a magic circle/ or CH 4; join into first CH to form a ring.
Note: it is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the first or last stitch of every round.
RND 1: Work 6 SC into ring.
RND 2: Work 2 SC into each SC all around (12 SC).
RND 3: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around
(18 SC).
RND 4: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (24 SC).
RND 5: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 3 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (30 SC).
RND 6 – 8: Work 1 SC into each SC all around (30 SC).
Special Stitch – SC2tog – work 2 single crochet stitches together.
RND 9: *SC2tog; work 1 SC into each of next 3 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (24 SC).
RND 10: *SC2tog; work 1 SC into each of next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (18 SC).
RND 11: *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (12 SC).
- Insert safety eyes (if used) between rounds 5 and 6.
- Stuff firmly – not overstuff.
RND 12: SC2tog x 6; SL ST and fasten off.
Weave tail throught stitches and close gap.

Robin – Breast:
With B – make a magic circle/ or CH 4; join into first CH to form a ring.
Note: it is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the first or last stitch of every round.
RND 1: Work 6 SC into ring.
RND 2: Work 2 SC into each SC all around (12 SC).
RND 3: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around
(18 SC).
RND 4: *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around (24 SC).
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Robin – Wings (make 2):
With A – make a magic circle/ or CH 4; join into first CH to form a ring.
CH 2; work 5 HDC into ring; CH 2; SL ST into ring.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Robin – Tail:
With A – CH 5; work 4 DC into 4 CH from hook; SL ST into SAME CH; SL ST into next CH (last chain); CH 3; work 4 DC into last CH; SL ST into last CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Nest:
With C – make a magic circle/ or CH 4; join into first CH to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 2 (does not count as a stitch); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked (12 DC).
RND 2: CH 2 (does not count as a stitch); work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into first DC worked. (24 DC)
RND 3: CH 2 (does not count as a stitch); work 2 DC into first DC; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into first DC worked. (36 DC)
TURN – for the next round work into back-loops only:
RND 4: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC all around; SL ST into first SC worked (36 SC).
RND 5: CH 1; work 2 SC into first SC; work 1 SC into each of next 2 SC. *Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into each of next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into first SC worked (48 SC).
RND 6: SL ST all around into each ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Leaves – make 3 (or as many as desired):
With E – CH 6.
Work SL ST into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 HDC into next CH; work 1 DC into next CH; work 6 DC into last CH – continue in the round – work 1 HDC into next CH; work 1 SC into next CH; SL ST into next CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Berries:
With B – CH 6.
Special Stitch – 3DCtog – work 3 double crochet stitches together into same CH.
4DCtog – work 4 double crochet stitches together into same CH.
Work 3DCtog into 4th CH from hook; work 4DCtog into next CH; work 4DCtog into last CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Finishing:
- Sew breast onto the bottom of the robin’s body – positioning it closer to the face section than the tail.
- Embroider a beak in a triangle shape between eyes and just above breast.
- Sew on tail at the back – approx. round 4/5.
- Sew wings onto the sides – approx. round 5/6
- Sew leaves and berries onto nest.
