Star Flower Crochet Square Wall Hanging

Difficulty Level | Skills Required

Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.

You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and provided in the instructions.

Materials

  • Hook – 3, 00 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Yarn:
Raeesah – Kismet Yarns – 100% Pure cotton (50 grams/100 meters/130 yards)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.

  • A – No 9 – light brown
  • B – No 42 – light blue
  • C – No 47 – light grey
  • D – No 38 – medium blue
  • E – No 46 – dark grey
  • F – No 45 – dark blue

Yarn Substitute:
Using the same type of yarn throughout the project is recommended. The pattern suggests DK yarn (Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light Worsted), but you are not limited to this type of yarn. Any yarn can be used if you take into consideration your sizing for the project will differ.

Tension | Gauge

Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However COUNTING your stitches will ensure a true success of this project!

Size

Square: approx. 28 cm x 28 cm (11 x 11 inches)
Wall Hanging in length: approx. 58 cm (23 inches)

Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size your wall hanging will be a different size!

INSTRUCTIONS:

The Square:

With A – make a magic ring / or CH 4; SL ST into first CH to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (does not count as a DC); work 16 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked. (16 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into any DC.

Tip: If your rnd 2 buckets due to tension and/or yarn type – increase CH space. i.e. CH 4.

RND 2: Work starting 3DCtog; CH 3; SKIP next DC. *Work 3DCtog into next DC; CH 3; SKIP next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into starting 3DCtog.
(8 x 3DCtog; 8 x 3 CH spaces) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into any 3 CH spaces.

Tip: When work the DC into the ST below – pull yarn level with current round’s stitches.

RND 3: Work 1 SC; work 1 DC into SKIPPED RND 2 DC; work 1 SC into same CH space; SKIP next 3DCtog; CH 3.
*Work [1 SC; work 1 DC into SKIPPED RND 2 DC; work 1 SC] into next 3 CH space; SKIP next 3DCtog; CH 3. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 DC; 16 SC; 8 x 3 CH spaces)

 

RND 4: SL ST into next DC; CH 1; work 1 SC into same ST; work 7 DC into next 3 CH space.
*Work 1 SC into next DC; work 7 DC into next 3 CH space. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 x Petals; 8 SC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into the FIRST DC of a 7 DC group (petal)

RND 5: Work 1 SC into DC; CH 7; SKIP next 5 DC; work 1 SC into last DC.
*Work 1 SC into FIRST DC of next petal; SKIP next 5 DC; work 1 SC into last DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times, SL ST into first SC worked.
(16 SC; 8 x 7 CH spaces)

RND 6: work 5 DC into next 7 CH space; CH 3; work 5 DC into SAME 7 CH space; SL ST in-between next 2 SC. *Work [5 DC; CH 3; 5 DC] into next 7 CH space; SL ST in-between next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times.
(8 x Petals = 16 x 5 DC groups; 8 x 3 CH spaces) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With E – join into the FIRST DC of 5 DC group (first group of petals)

RND 7: Work 1 SC into DC; SKIP next 4 DC; CH 6; work 1 SC into 3 CH space; SKIP next 4 DC; CH 6; work 1 SC into last DC of 5 DC group.
*Work 1 SC into first DC of 5 DC group; SKIP next 4 DC; CH 6; work 1 SC into 3 CH space; SKIP next 4 DC; CH 6; work 1 SC into last DC of 5 DC group. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(16 x 6 CH spaces; 8 SC worked into 3 CH spaces; 16 SC)

RND 8: work 4 DC into next 6 CH space; CH 3; work 4 DC into SAME 6 CH space; work 1 SC into next 3 CH space; work [4 DC; CH 3; 4 DC] into next 6 CH space; SL ST in-between next 2 SC.
*Work [4 DC; CH 3; 4 DC] into next 6 CH space; work 1 SC into next 3 CH space; work [4 DC; CH 3; 4 DC] into next 6 CH space; SL ST in-between next 2 SC. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times.
(8 x petals; 16 x 3 CH spaces) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With F- join into the FIRST 3 CH space of a petal.

Tip: If your rnd 9 buckets due to tension and/or yarn type – increase CH space. i.e. CH 10.

RND 9: Work 1 SC into CH space; CH 8; SKIP next 8 DC; work 1 SC into next 3 CH space; CH 5.
*Work 1 SC into next 3 CH space; CH 8; SKIP next 8 DC; work 1 SC into next 3 CH space; CH 5. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.

RND 10: *Work [5 DC; CH 3; 5 DC] into next 8 CH space; work [1 SC; Picot; 1 SC] into next 5 CH space. ** Repeat from * to ** 7 more times. SL ST into top of first DC worked.
(8 x petals; 8 x picots) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join into any petal 3 CH space.

RND 11: Work 1 SC into 3 CH space; CH 15. *Work 1 SC into next petal 3 CH space; CH 15. **
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 SC; 8 x 15 CH spaces)

Note: For the next round – work into chain spaces – not underneath the chain space.

RND 12: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [1 TR; CH 2; 2 TR] into same SC; work 1 TR into each of next 5 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 HDC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 HDC into next SC; work 1 HDC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 TR into each of next 5 CH.
*Work [2 TR; CH 2; 2 TR] into next SC; work 1 TR into each of next 5 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 HDC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 HDC into next SC; work 1 HDC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 5 CH; work 1 TR into each of next 5 CH. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.
(35 STS on each side = 14 TR; 10 DC; 11 HDC)

RND 13: SL ST in next TR; SL ST into next 2 CH corner space.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into same space; work 1 DC into each of next 35 STS. *Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 35 STS. ** Repeat from * to ** two more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(39 DC on each side)

RND 14: SL ST into next DC; SL ST into next 2 CH corner space.
CH 4 (counts as 1 TR) work [1 TR; CH 2; 2 TR] into same space; work 1 TR into each of next 2 DC; work 1 DC into each of next 35 DC; work 1 TR into each of next 2 DC.
*Work [2 TR; CH 2; 2 TR] into same space; work 1 TR into each of next 2 DC; work 1 DC into each of next 35 DC; work 1 TR into each of next 2 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** two more times; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.
(43 STS on each side = 8 TR; 35 DC)

RND 15: SL ST in next TR; SL ST into next 2 CH corner space.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into same space; work 1 DC into each of next 43 STS. *Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 DC into each of next 43 STS. ** Repeat from * to ** two more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(47 DC on each side) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Next Section: Top

Note: for the next part you will work from the back – i.e. turn square, so the back is facing towards you.

With E – join into corner with a SC.

ROW 1: *Work 1 SC into 2nd and 3rd back loops of DC (see photos). ** Repeat from all remaining 46 DC; work 1 SC into corner space. (49 SC) TURN.

ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC across. (49 SC) TURN.

ROW 3 – 10: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each SC across. (49 DC) TURN.

Finishing:
Fold piece over with square right-side facing – SL ST through DC and exposed front loop of square. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Border:

Note: Turn square wrong side facing – you will start at the back of an opening and then work all around towards the front; then work all around the square (right side facing); then finish with working around the opening.

With F – join into the first ST of opening.

  • Work SC evenly all-around opening;
  • work 1 SC into square corner space;
  • work 1 SC into each ST until corner;
  • work 2 SC into corner;
  • work 1 SC into each ST until corner;
  • work 2 SC into corner;
  • work 1 SC into each ST until corner;
  • work 1 SC into corner;
  • work SC evenly all-around opening.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Heart: Make 9 – 3 of each color

With B/D/F – make a magic circle / or CH 4; SL ST to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 3; work 3 TR into ring; work 3 DC into ring; CH 1; work 1 TR into ring; CH 1; work 3 DC into ring; work 3 TR into ring; CH 3; SL ST into ring.
Simplified Version: Work the following into ring – CH 3; 3 TR; 3 DC; CH 1; TR; CH 1; 3 DC; 3 TR; CH 3. Fasten off and weave in ends. (2 x 3 CH; 6 R; 6 DC; 2 x 1 CH spaces)

Heart Strings:

Note: for the next section – work into the BACK-LOOPS of all the Heart Stitches.

With C – join into bottom TR of a heart with a SC.

First Heart: Work 1 SC into each of next 3 DC; work 1 SC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 SC into each CH of next 3 CH – CH 10.

Second Heart: Work 1 SC into TR; work 1 SC into each of next 3 DC; work 1 SC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 SC into each CH of next 3 CH – CH 10.

Third Heart: Work 1 SC into TR; work 1 SC into each of next 3 DC; work 1 SC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 SC into each CH of next 3 CH – CH 10.
SL ST into Square – see photos for guide – there is a heart string on either side and one centered.

Continue working as follows:

Note: check that the 10 CH are NOT twisted.

Third Heart: Work 1 SC into each of next 10 CH; work 1 SC into each of next 2 CH of the 3 CH (first CH is hidden in the center of the heart); work 1 SC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 SC into each of next 3 DC.

Second Heart: Work 1 SC into each of next 10 CH; work 1 SC into each of next 2 CH of the 3 CH (first CH is hidden in the center of the heart); work 1 SC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 SC into each of next 3 DC.

First Heart: Work 1 SC into each of next 10 CH; work 1 SC into each of next 2 CH of the 3 CH (first CH is hidden in the center of the heart); work 1 SC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 SC into each of next 3 DC; SL ST into first SC work; work Picot; SL ST into first SC.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
