PART THREE:
Sewing & Borders

SKILL LEVEL:
Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.

SIZE:
Cushion: approx 35 cm (width) x 32 cm(height)

MATERIALS:
Yarns:
Small amounts of double knitting/light worsted yarn in various colors or
various colors in any yarn available

IMPORTANT NOTE – USE THE SAME TYPE OF YARN THROUGH OUT THE PROJECT!
Don’t stress – the size will just differ if different types are used 🙂

Hooks & Notions:
Size 3.50 Hook / or 4.00 Hook ( I used a 3.50 Hook)
Yarn Needle

GAUGE:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect as long as all the blocks are approx. the same size

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

Sewing:

Sew the 12 small Granny Squares together to form a block ( see photo).
Position the Heart Square to fit inside the block and sew. Weave in all ends.
I used the Whipstitch Method – but you can crochet the squares together 🙂

Rnd 1: Starting at the top on the right side of the block, join yarn with a SC into the 2 CH space of the Granny Square, |
TOP: continue to work 1 SC into each ST and 2 CH space until you reach the end of the top.
Work 1 SC, 2 CH and 1 DC into the corner of the last Granny Square ( see photo),
SIDE: continue down the side working 1 DC into each ST and 1 DC into each 2 CH space until you reach the bottom.
Work 1 DC, 2 CH and 1 SC into the corner of the last Granny Square,
BOTTOM: continue along the bottom part working 1 SC into each ST and 1 SC into each 2 CH space.
Work 1 SC, 2 CH and 1 DC into the corner of the last Granny Square,
SIDE: continue up the side working 1 DC into each ST and 1 DC into each 2 CH space until you reach the bottom.
Work 1 DC and 2 CH into 2 CH space,SL ST into top of 1 ST SC.

Rnd 2: CH1, SC into same ST, work 1 SC into each SC from previous round, work 1 SC, 2 CH and 1 DC into corner.
Work 1 DC into each DC from previous round, work 1 DC, 2 CH and 1 SC into corner.
Work 1 SC into each SC from previous round, work 1 SC, 2 CH and 1 DC into corner.
Work 1 DC into each DC from previous round, work 1 DC, 2 CH into corner, SL ST into first SC.
FO and weave in ends

Sewing:

Position the two large square over each other, right sides facing outwards.
Starting top left corner SC left side, bottom and right side together.
Attach the rectangle to the front panel only (small squares and heart square) and SC together.
The rectangle now forms a flap over the opening towards the back panel.

Flip over the flap and position flower to fit underneath the 10 CH opening
of the rectangle border. Sew into position.
Border:

Starting in a corner work as follows:
Rnd 1 : CH3, skip 2 STS, SL ST into next ST, SKIP 1 ST, SL ST into next ST. Repeat from * right around. SL ST into first 3 CH space.

 Rnd 2: CH 2, work 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC into same space, CH 2 and SL ST into same space.
*SL ST into next 3 CH space –  CH 2, work 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC into same space, CH 2 and SL ST into same space. Repeat from * all around. SL ST into top of 2 CH and FO. Weave in all ends.

The true story behind this project:
(If some of you were wondering about the odd size for this cushion)
This was supposed to be a pajama cushion for me, but somewhere during the design and construction it quickly turned into a cushion cover to rescue an old Winnie The Pooh cushion that was on it’s way to the trash. My daughter’s perfect strategy to keep on asking “What are you doing?” and walking by with the Pooh cushion with a pouting face won the war!

  2. Not sure about Round 1 for the final border. There is not an * for the beginning of the stitch pattern. Not sure which stitches I need to repeat. Thanks
