Log Cabin Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:  US Terminology

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Colors:
Approx. – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square

  • 105 Porcelain / or 001 White
  • 098 Citrus
  • 145 Camel
  • 194 Cognac
  • 220 Orangewood (variegated)
  • 136 Red
  • 294 Rust

INSTRUCTIONS:

TIP – IF YOU ARE USING 6 COLORS LIKE ME –
YOU WILL USE EACH COLOR 3 TIMES THROUGHOUT THIS GRANNY 🙂

Foundation Ring:
Make a 6 CH and join with a SL ST into the first CH to form a ring

SECTION 1:
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into rnd, CH 3. *Work 3 DC into ring, CH 3. Repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into the top of first 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

SECTION 2: (Change Color)
Join yarn to any CH 3 corner space, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same space, work 3 DC into next 3 CH corner space, CH 3,
TURN, work 3 DC in between the clusters from the precious row, work 1 DC into 3rd CH of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.
 
NOTE – EACH SECTION IS FINISHED WITH A WRONG SIDE ROW = 
TURN WORK RIGHT SIDE BEFORE STARTING NEW SECTION!!
SECTION 3: (Change Color)
Join yarn to the CH 3 space from previous section, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same space, work 3 DC into each space in between clusters until the end of the row,
TURN, CH 3 work 3 DC into each space in between clusters to the end of the row, work 1 DC into 3rd CH of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

REPEAT SECTION 3
Fasten off and weave in ends.
SECTION 5: (Change Color)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join yarn to the CH 3 space from previous section, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work (2 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC) into same space, work 3 DC into each space in between clusters 8 times. *Work 3 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC) into next 3 CH space, work 3 DC into each space in between clusters 8 times.. Repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into 3rd of CH 3
Fasten off and weave in ends.
