CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)

WHAT YOU WILL CROCHET:
River Applique with Removable Hippo
Tree
Giraffe Finger Puppet
NOTE: This page is worked on a new page. Or if you have made 6 separate pages – it is the third page.
INSTRUCTIONS:
River:
Yarn blue – changed yarn after each row; change to sand/beige for LAST row.
CH 45 (multiple of 14 plus 3)
ROW 1: Work 2 DC into 4th CH from hook; work 1 DC into next 3 CH; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 CH;
*work 3 DC into next 2 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 CH; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 CH.
Repeat from * until end; work 3 DC into last CH. TURN
ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end; TURN
ROW 3: Work 3 DC into FIRST SC; work 1 DC into next 3 SC; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 SC;
*work 3 DC into next 2 SC; work 1 DC into next 3 SC; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 SC.
Repeat from * until end; work 3 DC into last SC. TURN
Repeat row 2 and 3 once more;
ROW 6: CH 1; work 1 SC into next 10 STS; CH 15; SKIP 15 STS; work 1 SC into each ST until end; TURN
NOTE: for this row the 15 CH is treated as SC (15 SC).
ROW 7: Work 3 DC into FIRST SC; work 1 DC into next 3 SC; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 SC;
*work 3 DC into next 2 SC; work 1 DC into next 3 SC; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 SC.
Repeat from * until end; work 3 DC into last SC. TURN
ROW 8: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end; TURN
ROW 9: Work 3 DC into FIRST SC; work 1 DC into next 3 SC; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 SC;
*work 3 DC into next 2 SC; work 1 DC into next 3 SC; work 3DCtog x 2; work 1 DC into next 3 SC.
Repeat from * until end; work 3 DC into last SC. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
River Reeds/Grass: (Make Two)
Yarn green
Make a magic ring;
*CH any amount and work this formula:
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next CH;
work 1 HDC into next 2 CH;
work 1 DC into next ? CH; (? this is for the remaining CH you have left from the chain you have made)
work 1 TR into LAST CH;
SL ST into magic ring.
Repeat from * 3 more times.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Peek A Boo Hippo:
Yarn grey
TIP – This part is made by working in continuous rounds, so you may want to use a stitch marker to keep record of your current rnd.
Make a magic ring
RND 1: work 6 SC into ring;
RND 2: work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC);
RND 3: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around (18 SC);
RND 4: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next 2 SC. Repeat from * all around (24 SC);
RND 5: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next 3 SC. Repeat from * all around (30 SC);
RND 6: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next 4 SC. Repeat from * all around (36 SC);
ROW 7: SL ST into next SC; SKIP 2 SC; work 4 TR into next SC; work 2 TR into next 2 SC; work 4 TR into next SC; SKIP 2 SC; SL ST into next. (12 TR)
SL ST all around circle – STOP at 4th TR (see photo);
Ear – CH 5; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; then SL ST into SAME SC as start of 5 CH.
SL ST into next 4 TR – repeat instructions fr ear.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Mouth:
Yarn grey (lighter) – or optional can use pink
Make a magic ring
ROW 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 5 DC into ring (6 DC); TURN
ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 2 DC into each DC until end (12 DC); TURN
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC until end (12 SC); TURN
ROW 4: CH 1; work 2 SC into first SC; work 1 SC into next SC;
*Work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC.
Repeat from * until end (18 SC) – continue working SC evenly along the bottom of the half circle.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
With a small amount of black yarn embroider some nostrils.
Teeth:
Yarn white
Join white yarn with an SC on either the right or left bottom part of the face;
work 1 SC into next 2 spaces(STS) (3 SC); TURN
Work 2 rows more and fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew mouth onto the bottom part of the face – before closing stuff
with a small amount of fiberfill/toy stuffing.
Glue 15 mm googly eyes onto face.
TIP – if making for small (toddlers) rather embroider eyes or sew on small buttons securely.
Tree:
With golden brown/or any brown
CH 32
ROW 1: Work 1 DC into 4th CH; work 1 DC into next 10 CH;
CH 10; work 1 DC into 4th CH; work 1 DC into next 7 CH;
work 2 DC ‘into’ the DC of the branch;
work 1 DC into next 18 CH; TURN
ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into next 15 STS;
work 1 HDC into next 5 STS; work 1 SC into next 8 STS; TURN
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Tree Top:
Yarn green
Make a magic ring
ROW 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 7 DC into ring (8 DC); TURN
ROW 2: working into FRONT-LOOPS only; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 2 DC into each DC until end (16 DC); TURN
ROW 3: working into BACK-LOOPS only; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next DC. Repeat from until end.
ROW 4: working into FRONT-LOOPS only; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC. Repeat from until end.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
FOR THIS PART WORK INTO THE EXPOSED LOOPS OF EACH ROW!
Join yarn at the start of the row and into each loop work randomly a
collection of 3 STS (SC;HDC;DC) in any order.
Fasten of ends and weave in.
BUILDING THE PAGE:
Surface whip-stitch all the pieces into place.
You only catch the surface top stitches so that you stitches do NOT go thru to the other side of the page.

Step One – position the river at the bottom left of the page. Sew into position but keep
the space as shown in the photo open.
Step Two – Sew the River Reed/Grass into position – I placed mine into the space
of the waves – see photo.
Step Three – Sew Tree Bottom and Top onto the left side of the page.
Step Four – Measure a piece of ribbon approx 20/30 cm long – glue or sew onto the
back of the Hippo’s face.
Insert Hippo into the River ‘Pocket’.
GIRAFFE FINGER PUPPET:
yarns orange/yellow and brown
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Mouth:
Make a magic ring;
RND 1: work 6 DC into ring/circle;
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
Sew mouth onto face – use photo as a guide.
Use a small amount of black to make some nostrils. (Although I will admit mine looks a like a mouth!)
Horns:
Join brown yarn into a ST on top of the head;
CH 3; work 1 DC into same ST – if it seems to large make it a HDC;
SL ST into next ST and repeat.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Ears:
Join orange/yellow yarn into the ST next to a horn on top of the head;
CH 5; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; then SL ST into SAME SC as start of 5 CH.
Repeat for the other side.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With some brown yarn embroider a few spots randomly over the ‘body’.
Glue 10 mm googly eyes onto face.
TIP – if making for small (toddlers) rather embroider eyes or sew on small buttons securely.
