The Scrapsadelic Groovy Crochet Cushion Part One is part of a fun, unique cushion worked in a variety of stitches.
A puzzle constructed as you crochet.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Special Stitches:
FPDC – front post double crochet
Insert your hook into the front of your work, behind the indicated stitch, and then through your work such that your hook is now at the front of your work again. Pull through final 2 loops on your hook.
3DCtog:
[Yarn over, insert hook in SAME ch space, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 3 times,
yarn over, draw through all loops on hook

PART ONE:
There is no fixed color sequence – you can use colors randomly or in order, even solid color through out – completely YOUR CHOICE!
With color
CH 6; SL ST to form a ring
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into FIRST DC worked (12 DC)
RND 2: CH 4 (counts as 1 DC and 1 CH; work 1 DC into SAME ST;
(work [1 DC; CH 1; 1 DC] into NEXT ST) x 11; SL ST into 3rd of 4 CH;
(24 DC; 12 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into any 1CH space;
RND 3: CH 3; work 2DCtog into SAME space; CH 3;
(work 3DCtog into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 3) x 11; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH;
(12 x Clusters (3DCtog); 12 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into any 3CH space;
RND 4: CH 1 (does NOT count as a ST); work 1 HDC into 3 CH space; work 1 DC IN-BETWEEN 2 DC of RND 2; work 1 HDC into SAME 3 CH space; CH 2.
*Work 1 HDC into NEXT 3 CH space; work 1 DC IN-BETWEEN 2 DC of RND 2; work 1 HDC into SAME 3 CH space; CH 2. Repeat from * 10 more times.
(12 DC; 24 HDC; 12 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into FIRST HDC ST of a (HDC, DC, HDC) group;
NOTE: IF your circle is pulling slightly into a bowl – do not panic it WILL straighten out. IF it does bowl a lot – use a larger hook for this round only.
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next HDC; CH 2;
(work 1 DC into next 3 STS; CH 2) x 11; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(36 DC; 12 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into FIRST DC of a 3 DC group
RND 6: Work 1 SC into joining DC; work 1 FPDC around DC of RND 4; work 1 SC into next DC;
work 1 SC into 2 CH space; work 1 DC into 2 CH space of RND 4; work 1 SC into 2 CH space (RND 5).
*Work 1 SC into NEXT DC; work 1 FPDC around DC of RND 4; work 1 SC into next DC;
work 1 SC into 2 CH space; work 1 DC into 2 CH space of RND 4; work 1 SC into 2 CH space (RND 5).
Repeat from * 10 more times. SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into any ST
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 7: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each ST all around. (72 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into any ST
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into the DC BEFORE the joining STITCH; CH 1;
[SKIP NEXT DC; work 1 DC into NEXT DC; work 1 DC into SKIPPED DC] 1 x Cross Stitch Made; CH 1.
*Work 1 Cross Stitch; CH 1. Repeat from * 33 more times.
(36 x Cross Stitches; 36 x 1 CH spaces)

Join new color into any ST
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 9: Work 1 SC into each DC and 1 CH spaces all around (108 SC);
SL ST into first SC worked.

Join new color into any ST
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 10: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into the SC BEFORE the joining STITCH; CH 1;
[SKIP NEXT SC; work 1 DC into NEXT SC; work 1 DC into SKIPPED SC] 1 x Cross Stitch Made; CH 1.
*Work 1 Cross Stitch; CH 1. Repeat from * 51 more times.

NOTE: this round might become a bit ‘frilly’ but do not worry about it – this will disappear in the design!
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 11: Work 1 SC into each DC and 1 CH spaces all around (162 SC);
SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join new color into any ST
NOTE: you will have an UN-WORKED SC ST in the CENTER of your Cross Stitch – see photo below
IMPORTANT FOR SURFACE ROUND: For this round work into back-loops only
RND 12: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into the 2nd SC BEFORE the joining STITCH; CH 1;
[SKIP NEXT 2 SC; work 1 DC into NEXT SC; work 1 DC into the FIRST SKIPPED SC] 1 x Cross Stitch Made; CH 1.
*Work 1 Cross Stitch (remember to SKIP 2 SC – to have an UN-WORKED SC); CH 1. Repeat from * 51 more times.
(54 x Cross Stitches = 108 DC; 54 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Surface Round:
Join new color into the SC loop NEXT TO AN UN-WORKED CENTER Cross Stitch SC with a SL ST;
SL ST into loop of UN-WORKED SC; CH 10; SL ST into SAME loop;
*SL ST into next 2 SC loops; SL ST into loop of UN-WORKED SC; CH 10; SL ST into SAME loop.
Repeat from * 52 more times. SL ST into first loop;
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With loops facing inwards
With loops facing outwards
Join new color into any ST
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 13: CH 1 (does NOT counts as 1 ST); work 1 HDC into each DC all round (108 HDC);
SL ST into first HDC worked;
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Pull the each 10 CH loop thru the CENTER of corresponding Cross Stitch to the BACK – the loops will be at the back of your RND 13 HDC stitches.
RND 14: CH 1 (does NOT counts as 1 ST); work 1 SC into joining HDC; CH 2; work 1 SC into next 2 HDC;
*CH 2; work 1 SC into next 2 HDC. Repeat from * all around. SL ST into first SC.
(54 x 2 CH spaces; 108 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Pull the 10 CH loops BACK to the FRONT thru the 2 CH spaces of RND 14.
