Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

INSTRUCTIONS:
PART ONE:
Make a magic ring or CH 6 and SL ST to form a ring;
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring (12 DC);
SL ST into first DC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Change color – join yarn into any back-loop of any DC with a SL ST
RND 2: working into back-loops only; CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 2 DC into joining loop;
work 2 DC into each DC all around (24 DC); SL ST into first DC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Change color – join yarn into any back-loop of any DC with a SL ST
RND 3: working into back-loops only; *CH 7; work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook;
work 1 SC into next 5 CH (6 SC); SKIP NEXT DC; SL ST into NEXT 2 DC.**
Rep from * to ** 7 more times. SL ST into joining SL ST.
(8 spokes with 6 SC; 16 x SL ST )
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Change color – join yarn into any FIRST CH OF A 7 CH SPOKE WITH A SC – this will be your FIRST SC
RND 4: Work 1 SC into NEXT 5 CH; CH 3; work 1 SC into NEXT 6 SC – this is down the opposite side of the spoke;
SKIP the 2 SL STS.
*Work 1 SC into NEXT 6 CH; CH 3; work 1 SC into NEXT 6 SC; SKIP the 2 SL STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times. SL ST into FIRST SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Change color – join yarn into the back-loop of the SECOND SC worked of PREVIOUS ROUND – you will skip the FIRST SC at the START of a SPOKE
RND 5: working into back-loops only; work 1 SC into NEXT 4 SC;
work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into 3 CH – this is at the TOP of a spoke;
work 1 SC into next 5 SC; SKIP NEXT 2 SC.
*Work 1 SC into NEXT 5 SC; work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into 3 CH – this is at the TOP of a spoke;
work 1 SC into next 5 SC; SKIP NEXT 2 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 6 more times. SL ST into FIRST SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Change color – join yarn into ANY DC (top of a spoke) WITH A SC – this will be your FIRST SC
NOTE: – when working the ‘point’ – [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into the DC – work thru BOTH LOOPS.
RND 6: working into back-loops only; CH 2; work 1 SC into starting DC; SKIP next HDC; work 1 SC into next SC;
work 1 HDC into next 4 SC; SKIP next SC; work 1 TR into ‘space’ between RND 3 & 4;
SKIP next SC; work 1 HDC into next 4 SC; work 1 SC into next SC; SKIP next HDC.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next DC; SKIP next HDC; work 1 SC into next SC;
work 1 HDC into next 4 SC; SKIP next SC; work 1 TR into ‘space’ between RND 3 & 4;

work 1 SC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 DC into next ST; SKIP next ST;
work 1 FPDC around next TR; SKIP next ST; work 1 DC into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS;

RND 9: SL ST into 2 CH space; CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into 2 CH space;
work 1 DC into next SC; work 1 DC into next 5 CH; work 1 SC into next SC;
work 1 DC into next 12 CH; work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 DC into next 5 CH; work 1 SC into next SC.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next 2 CH space;

RND 10: work 2 CH; 1 SC into starting 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 15 DC; SL ST into 2 CH space of RND 7 (see photo); work 1 SC into next 15 DC.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 15 DC; SL ST into 2 CH space of RND 7 (see photo); work 1 SC into next 15 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(32 DC on each side – the SL ST does NOT count as a ST.)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Size of square is approx 8 inches (20 cm)
NEXT:
Change color – join yarn into ANY FIRST SC of a SIDE.
NOTE: for this part work into back-loops only AND start each row from the RIGHT (no turning).
Change color with each row.
I also used a STANDING TREBLE CROCHET STITCH – find tutorial links at the start of this post under Special Stitches – this is optional – you CH 4 for a TREBLE.
ROW 1: Work 1 TR into first 2 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS;
work 1 SC into next 4 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
work 1 TR into next 4 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS;
work 1 SC into next 4 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
work 1 TR into last 2 STS.
ROW 2: Work 1 SC into first 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
work 1 TR into next 4 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS;
work 1 SC into next 4 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
work 1 TR into next 4 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS;

Fasten off and weave in ends – you can leave ends (optional) to be worked away under the next sections.
