Little Christmas Hanging Crochet Elf – Free Crochet Pattern
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 175 yards (180 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
- Hook – 3, 25 mm (D) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Optional: Stuffing
- Optional: Ribbon
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.
Finished Size:
Length: 9 inch (23 cm)
Width: (body) 3 ½inch (9 cm)

Body: make two
With A – CH 16
ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN.
(15 SC)
ROW 2 – 16: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
(15 SC)
ROW 17: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 11 SC; SC2tog; TURN.
(13 SC)
ROW 18: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 9 SC; SC2tog; TURN.
(11 SC)
ROW 19: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 7 SC; SC2tog; TURN.
(9 SC)
ROW 20: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 5 SC; SC2tog; TURN.
(7 SC)
ROW 21: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Head:
With B – join into first SC of ROW 21.
ROW 22: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.

Pocket:
TIP: start with a long tail to sew pocket onto doll.
With D – CH 11
ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN.

ROW 2 – 8: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
(10 SC)
ROW 9: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 6 SC; SC2tog; TURN.
(8 SC)
ROW 10: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 4; SC2tog; TURN.
(6 SC)
ROW 11: CH 1; SC2tog; work 1 SC into next 2; SC2tog; TURN.
(4 SC)
ROW 12: CH 1; SC2tog twice;
TURN; SL ST all around pocket.
Fasten off.
Elf Hat:
TIP: start with a long tail to sew hat onto doll.
With C – CH 36; SL ST to make a ring.
RND 1: work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC.
(36 SC)
Use a STITCH MARKER to make your FIRST SC – you will work in continuous rounds.
RND 2 – 3: work 1 SC into each SC. (36 SC)
RND 4: *work 1 SC into next 4 SC; SC2tog. ** Repeat from * to ** all around. (30 SC)
RND 5: work 1 SC into each SC. (30 SC)
RND 6: *work 1 SC into next 3 SC; SC2tog. ** Repeat from * to ** all around. (24 SC)
RND 7: work 1 SC into each SC. (24 SC)
RND 8: *work 1 SC into next 2 SC; SC2tog. ** Repeat from * to ** all around. (18 SC)
RND 9: work 1 SC into each SC. (18 SC)
RND 10: *work 1 SC into next 1 SC; SC2tog. ** Repeat from * to ** all around. (12 SC)
RND 11- 16: work 1 SC into each SC. (12 SC)
RND 17: work SC2tog x 6. (6 SC)
RND 18: work 1 SC into each SC. (6 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Hat Trim:
With D – join into any SC at the point of the hat.
*CH 5; work 4 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 4 SC into each of next 3 CH; SL ST into next SC. **
Repeat from * to ** 3/4/5 more times – depending on how ‘thick’ you want your ‘pom pom’.
Fasten off and leave a tail for ‘gathering’ the pom pom together, then weave in ends.

Legs: make 2
With B – join on bottom edge; CH 21.
Work 4 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 4 SC into each CH until end;
SL ST into same place as join.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Feet: repeat for both legs.
With C – join into a SC on the bottom of the leg.
Work [SL ST; SC; HDC; DC; 3TR; DC; HDC; SC; SL ST] into SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Arms: make 2
With B – join on bottom edge; CH 21.
Work 4 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 4 SC into each CH until end;
SL ST into same place as join.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Hands: repeat for both arms.
With C – join into a SC on the bottom of the leg.
Work [SL ST; SC; HDC; DC; 2TR; DC; HDC; SC; SL ST] into SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional: For Hanging:
At the top of the head where the hat is attached join B with a SL ST and CH 10; SL ST into same ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
