Ula Beam Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

  • A – Natural (6g)
  • B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
  • C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (6g)
  • D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
  • E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
  • F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
  • G – Peacock/Aubergine (6g)

Instructions:

NOTE:
RNDS 3 – 7 will cause the center to twist slightly – this is correct!

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC..
Special Stitch: 3DCtog
Work 3 double crochet together in same DC.

RND 3: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 4 DC; work [3DCtog; CH 3; 3DCtog] into next DC.
*Work 1 DC into next 5 DC; work [3DCtog; CH 3; 3DCtog] into next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(5 DC on each side = 20 DC; 8 x 3DCtog; 4 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any DC AFTER a 3DCtog
Special Stitch: 5 DC Popcorn
Popcorn – work 5 DC into same space; remove hook; insert hook into FIRST DC of 5 DC; insert hook into LAST DC of 5 DC; yarn over pull thru BOTH loops; CH 1 to lock Popcorn.

RND 4: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC: work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work 2 DC into next DC; CH 2; work Popcorn into next 3 CH space; CH 2.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work 2 DC into next DC; CH 2; work Popcorn into next 3 CH space; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(7 DC on each side = 28 DC; 4 x Popcorn; 8 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into 2 CH space BEFORE a Popcorn
Special Stitch: FPTR
Front Post Treble

RND 5: CH 3; work 1 DC into same space; CH 3; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPTR around RND 3 3DCtog; work 1 DC into next 7 DC; work 1 FPTR around RND 3 3DCtog.
*Work 2 DC into next 2 CH space,
CH 3; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPTR around RND 3 3DCtog; work 1 DC into next 7 DC; work 1 FPTR around RND 3 3DCtog
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(11 DC on each side =  44 DC; 8 x FPTR; 4 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join F into any DC AFTER a 3CH space.

RND 6: CH 3; work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next FPTR; work 1 DC into next 7 DC; work 1 DC into next FPTR; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; CH 2; work FPTR around next RND 4 Popcorn; CH 2.
* Work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 1 DC into next FPTR; work 1 DC into next 7 DC; work 1 DC into next FPTR; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; CH 2; work FPTR around next RND 4 Popcorn; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(13 DC on each side = 52 DC; 4 x FPTR; 8 x 2 CH spaces.)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 2 CH space BEFORE a FPTR.

RND 7: CH 1; work 2 HDC into space; CH 2; work 2 HDC into next 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 13 DC.
*Work 2 HDC into next 2 CH space; CH 2; work 2 HDC into next 2 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 13 DC.
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(17 HDC on each side = 68)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 2 CH corner space.

Special Stitch:
Puff ST:  (Yarn over; insert hook into SAME HDC; yarn over pull through ) x 4 times; yarn over; pull through all loops on hook; CH 1 to lock.

RND 8: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into SAME space ; CH 1; SKIP next HDC; work (Puff ST; CH 1; SKIP next HDC) x 8 times.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; CH 1; SKIP next HDC; work (Puff ST; CH 1; SKIP next HDC) x 8 times.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(8 Puff STS on each side; 9 x 1 CH spaces; 4 x corners = 4 DC; 2 CH)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 9: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same corner; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; (1 TR into SKIPPED RND 7 HDC; CH 1; SKIP Puff ST) x 8 times; work 1 TR into SKIPPED RND 7 HDC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.

RND 13: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
