Diamond Star Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

• Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
• Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
• Scissors
• Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

• A – Natural (5g)
• B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
• C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (4g)
• D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
• E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
• F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
• G – Peacock/Aubergine (7g)

Instructions:

Please Note: Overlay Section is optional.

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC.

RND 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into same DC; work 1 SC into next DC; SKIP next DC; work [HDC; DC; TR] into next DC; CH 1; work [TR; DC; HDC] into next DC; SKIP next DC.
* Work 1 SC into next 2 DC; SKIP next DC; work [HDC; DC; TR] into next DC; CH 1; work [TR; DC; HDC] into next DC; SKIP next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 SC; 8 HDC; 8 DC; 8 TR; 4 x 1 CH spaces = 32 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 1 CH space.

RND 4: CH 1; work 1 SC; SKIP next 3 STS; work 4 TR into next SC; CH 2; work 4 TR into next SC; SKIP next 3 STS.
*Work 1 SC into next 1 CH space; SKIP next 3 STS; work 4 TR into next SC; CH 2; work 4 TR into next SC; SKIP next 3 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(4 SC; 32 TR; 4 x 2 CH spaces = 36 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into any 2 CH space.

RND 5: CH 1; work 1 SC into space; work 1 HDC into next TR;
work 1 DC into next 2 TR;
work 1 TR into next TR;
work [2 TR; CH 2; 2 TR] into next SC;
work 1 TR into next TR;
work 1 DC into next 2 TR;
work 1 HDC into next TR.
*Work 1 SC into next 2 CH space;
work 1 HDC into next TR;
work 1 DC into next 2 TR;
work 1 TR into next TR;
work [2 TR; CH 2; 2 TR] into next SC;
work 1 TR into next TR;
work 1 DC into next 2 TR;
work 1 HDC into next TR.**

(4 SC; 8 HDC; 16 DC; 24 TR; 4 x 2 CH spaces = 52 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join F into any 2 CH space.

RND 6: CH 1; work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 13 STS.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 13 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(15 SC on each side = 60 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 2 CH space.

RND 7: CH 3; work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into space; (SKIP next SC; CH 1; work 1 DC into next SC) x 7 times; CH 1; SKIP next SC.
* Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into space; (SKIP next SC; CH 1; work 1 DC into next SC) x 7 times; CH 1; SKIP next SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(11 DC; 8 x 1 CH spaces on each side = 76 STS – included CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 2 CH space.

RND 8: CH 1; work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 2 DC; (work 1 TR into SKIPPED RND 6 SC; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next DC.
* Work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 2 DC; (work 1 TR into SKIPPED RND 6 SC; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(15 SC; 8 TR on each side = 92 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any 2 CH space.

RND 9: CH 3; work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into space; work 1 DC into next 23 STS.
* Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 DC into next 23 STS. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(27 DC on each side = 108 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 2 CH space.

RND 10: CH 1; work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 27 DC.
*Work [2 SC; CH 2; 2 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 27 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(31 SC on each side = 124 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends

Join D into any 2 CH space.

RND 11: CH 1; work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 31 SC.
*Work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 31 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(33 SC on each side = 132 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends

Join E into any 2 CH space.

RND 12: CH 1; work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into space; work 1 SC into next 33 SC.
*Work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 33 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(35 SC on each side = 140STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.

RND 13: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

OPTIONAL:  Overlay Crochet Section:
Note: you will be working on top of your square.

With F join with a SC over any 1^st SC of a 2 SC group of RND 3 by inserting your hook from front to back, then back to front around the SC post.

Continue as follows:
*CH 5; work 1 SC around RND 5 SC post directly above; CH 5;
work 1 SC around RND 3 2^nd SC post;
SL ST around next RND 2 4 DC posts;
work 1 SC around next RND 3 1^st SC post. **
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times.
SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and pull your yarn ends to the back of the square and weave in.
You will have 4 x petals.
