2023 CAB Joining and Border
Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.
You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light. - Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
RS – right side
WS- wrong side
Gauge:
Not necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and/or hook sizing will differ.
Using the SAME hook and yarn will ensure your squares are consistent in size.
Pattern Notes:
Stitch count is important!
For completing the blanket – correct stitch count will ensure a successful joining of squares
Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)
Colors:
Approx – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square
A – Natural
B – Cappuccino
C – Princess Aqua
D – Khaki
E – Olive
F – Old Gold
G 1 – Kingfisher
G 2 – Tomato
Special Stitches:
How to Work Crochet Popcorn Stitch:
Starting Popcorn:
- CH 3 – this counts as your FIRST DC.
- Work 4 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
Popcorn:
- Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Front-Post Double-Crochet (FPDC):
- Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches.
- The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
- Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
- You now have 3 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice.
- One front post double crochet (FPDC) is complete.

Instructions:
NOTE: The layout, the joining and the border are all OPTIONAL. The squares can be joined in any order, a joining of own choice can be used and a border of own choice.

How I joined – I placed my squares according to the layout above and then I worked each column vertically together and then horizontally,
Flat Zipper Join
Note: Work into the BACK LOOPS only.
With B and 4,50 mm Hook
Joining the first two squares:
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the FIRST square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the SECOND square corner space.
Insert hook from the front to the back of the back-loop of the first ST;
Find the back-loop on the SECOND square to be joined of the EXACT opposite ST of the first square;
Insert hook front the front to the back of that back-loop;
Yarn over;
Pull through all three loops on hook.
Note: As you work slightly tighten yours stitches so that they are nice and tidy.
*Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the FIRST square;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the SECOND square;
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook.**
Repeat from * to ** until end of squares.
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the FIRST CH of the FIRST square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the FIRST CH of the SECOND square corner space.
Joining THIRD and FOURTH squares: these instructions will be repeated for all the squares.
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the THIRD square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the FOURTH square corner space.
*Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the THIRD square;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the FOURTH square;
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook.**
Repeat from * to ** until end of squares.
Continue repeating instructions until all squares are joined.
Note: when working the center section, work over the first joining and continue.
Border:
With B and 4,50 mm Hook join into any corner space.
RND 1: CH 4 (counts as 1 HDC and 2 CH corner space); work 1 HDC into SAME space; *work 1 HDC into next 32 SC; work a 3DCtog over next [corner space; join; corner space].**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; work 1 HDC into next 32 SC.
#Work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into next corner space; *work 1 HDC into next 32 SC; work a 3DCtog over next [corner space; join; corner space].**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; work 1 HDC into next 32 SC.##
Repeat from # to ## 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 4 CH.
(166 STS per side)
NOTE: Change to 4, 00 mm Hook and work into the 3rd loop of each HDC ST.
RND 2: SL ST into 2 CH corner space; CH 4 (counts as 1 HDC and 2 CH corner space); work 1 HDC into SAME space; work 1 HDC into each of next 166 HDC.
*Work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 166 HDC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 4 CH.
(168 STS per side)
RND 3: SL ST into 2 CH corner space; CH 4 (counts as 1 HDC and 2 CH corner space); work 1 HDC into SAME space; work 1 HDC into each of next 166 HDC.
*Work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 166 HDC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 4 CH.
(170 STS per side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With C – join into any corner space.
Note: Work into the 3rd loop of each HDC ST.
RND 4: Work Starting Popcorn (special stitches) into corner; CH 2; work 1 DC into each of next 170 STS; CH 2.
*Work Popcorn (special stitches) into corner; CH 2; work 1 DC into each of next 170 STS; CH 2.** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times.
RND 5: SL ST into top of 1st Popcorn; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPDC (special stitches) around each of next DC; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPDC around next Popcorn.
*Work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPDC (special stitches) around each of next DC; work 2 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPDC around next Popcorn.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times.
(170 FPDC + 4 DC on each side – NOT including the FPDC around popcorn)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With A – join into any FPDC worked around a Popcorn.
RND 6: CH 2 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into SAME FPDC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 2 DC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 170 FPDC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 2 DC.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next Popcorn FPDC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 2 DC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 170 FPDC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 2 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.
(178 STS on each side)
RND 7: SL ST into next 2 CH space; work [1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into SAME space; work 1 SC into each of next 178 STS.
*Work [ 1 SC; CH 2; 1 SC] into next corner space; work 1 SC into each of next 178 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(180 SC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join with a SL ST into any corner space.
RND 8: #*Work [SL ST; 1 SC] into next SC; work [1 HDC; 1 DC] into next SC; work 1 TR into next SC; work 1 TR into next SC; work [1 DC; 1 HDC] into next SC; work [1 SC; SL ST] into next SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 29 more times; SL ST into next corner space.##
Repeat from # to ## 3 more times.
(30 x Fans on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
