CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Special Stitches:

How to Work 3 Double Crochet Together (3DCtog):

  • Work 3 double crochet into space or single ST, holding the last loop of each double crochet on the hook.
  • Yarn over and pull the yarn through all four loops on the hook.

HDC Starting Popcorn:

  • CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 4 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the 2nd CH of 2 CH.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the chain.

5 HDC Popcorn:

  • Work 5 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first half double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Crochet Popcorn Stitch:

Starting Popcorn:

  • CH 3 – this counts as your FIRST DC.
  • Work 4 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Popcorn:

  • Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Front-Post Double-Crochet (FPDC):

  • Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches.
  • The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice.
  • One front post double crochet (FPDC) is complete.

How to Work Front-Post Half Double-Crochet (FPHDC):

  • Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches or according to the instructions in the pattern.
  • The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
  • One front post half double crochet (FPHDC) is complete.

For Both Squares:

With B – join into any 3 CH corner space.

Note: All CH 1 spaces at the corners are SKIPPED.

RND 14 (square 1)/16 (square 2): CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [1 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into SAME corner space; work 1 FPTR around next HDC Popcorn; work 1 TR into next FPHDC; work 1 TR into each of next 37 HDC; work 1 TR into next FPHDC; work 1 FPTR around next HDC Popcorn.
*Work [2 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into SAME corner space; work 1 FPTR around next HDC Popcorn; work 1 TR into next FPHDC; work 1 TR into each of next 37 HDC; work 1 TR into next FPHDC; work 1 FPTR around next HDC Popcorn. ** Repeat from *to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH. (2 x FPTR; 43 TR = 45 STS on each side) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Flat Zipper Join

Note: Work into the BACK LOOPS only.

With E and 4,00 mm Hook (G)

Joining FIRST and SECOND squares:

Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the FIRST square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the SECOND square corner space.

Insert hook from the front to the back of the back-loop of the first ST;
Find the back-loop on the SECOND square to be joined of the EXACT opposite ST of the first square;
Insert hook front the front to the back of that back-loop;
Yarn over;
Pull through all three loops on hook.

Note: As you work slightly tighten yours stitches so that they are nice and tidy.

*Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the FIRST square;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the SECOND square;
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook. **

Repeat from * to ** until end of squares.

Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the FIRST CH of the FIRST square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the FIRST CH of the SECOND square corner space.

Joining THIRD and FOURTH squares:

Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the THIRD square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the SECOND CH of the FOURTH square corner space.

*Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the THIRD square;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the next ST of the FOURTH square;
Yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook. **

Repeat from * to ** until the end of squares.

Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the FIRST CH of the THIRD square corner space;
Insert hook from the front to back into the back-loop of the FIRST CH of the FOURTH square corner space.

Repeat all the joining instructions once more to complete the joining of the squares.
Note: when working the center section, work over the first joining and continue.

Border Section One:

With E and 4, 00 mm hook– join into any 3 CH corner space.

RND 1: Work [Starting HDC Popcorn (special stitches); 3 CH; HDC Popcorn (special stitches)] in corner space; CH 1; work 1 HDC into each of next 45 TR; work 2HDCtog over next 3 CH corner space, join and next 3 CH corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 45 TR; CH 1.
* Work [HDC Popcorn; 3 CH; HDC Popcorn] in corner space; CH 1; work 1 HDC into each of next 45 TR; work 2HDCtog over next 3 CH corner space, join and next 3 CH corner space; work 1 HDC into each of next 45 TR; CH 1. **

Note: For the next 3 rounds work into the 3rd loop of each HDC stitch.

With A and 3,50 mm hook – join into any 3 CH corner space.

RND 2: Work [Starting HDC Popcorn (special stitches); 3 CH; HDC Popcorn (special stitches)] in corner space; CH 1; work 1 FPHDC (special stitches) around next Popcorn; work 1 HDC into each of next 91 HDC; work 1 FPHDC around next Popcorn; CH 1.
