Abbreviations:  US Terminology

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

INSTRUCTIONS

PART ONE:

A Big Wheel, a few Swirly’s and a Circle or six.

SIZE:

  • Small Circle – 6 cm x 6 cm
  • Swirly Square – 8 cm x 8 cm
  • Big Wheel – 26 cm x 26 cm

The Small Circle: (Make 6)

Note: 

I made two circles changing color every round and four circles changing color only on the last round.

Make a magic ring/or CH 4; SL ST into 4th CH from hook to form a ring.

RND 1: CH1, work 6 SC into ring, join with a SL ST into first SC made (6 SC)
– (change color)

RND 2: CH1, work 2 SC into each ST around, join with a SL ST into first SC made (12 SC)
– (change color)

RND 3: CH1, work 1 SC into same ST, *work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times, work 2 SC into next ST, join with a SL ST into first SC made (18 SC) – (change color)

RND 4: CH1, work 2 SC into same ST, *work 1 SC into next 2 STS, work 2 SC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to ** 4 more times, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, join with a SL ST into first SC made (24 SC) – (change color)

RND 5: CH1, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST. *Work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST. **
Repeat from * to ** twice more, join with a SL ST into first SC made.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

The Swirly Square: (Make 2)

Note: 

Might need a STITCH MARKER to help with the rounds because this square is made in continuous rounds.

Insert STITCH MARKER into first ST worked of every round – to help keep track of the start of each round.

Make a magic ring/or CH 4; SL ST into 4th CH from hook to form a ring.

RND 1: Work 6 SC into ring.

RND 2: For this round work in back loops only – work 2 HDC into each ST (12 HDC)

RND 3: For this round work in back loops only
*work 1 DC into next ST, work 2 DC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to **until last ST worked of this round.

RND 4: For this round work in back loops only – *work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 2 DC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to ** until last ST worked of this round.

RND 5: *Work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST. ** Repeat from * to **3 more times.

Change Color

RND 6: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST – but work 3 SC into each corner TR from previous round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

The Swirl is worked from the center of the square outwards.

Join new color yarn with a SC into the center exposed loop, work 1 SC into same loop.

Work 2 SC into each loop until 2nd last loop, work a SL ST into last loop.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

The Big Wheel: (Make 1)

Note:  SPECIAL STITCH – V-stitch – V-ST: work 1 DC, CH1, 1 DC into same ST

Make a magic ring/or CH 4; SL ST into 4th CH from hook to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 15 DC into ring, join with SL ST into top of 3CH.
(16 DC) – change color

RND 2: CH 5 (counts as 1 DC and 2 CH). *Work 1 DC into next ST, CH 2. **
Repeat from * to **15 times; join with a SL ST into the 3rd of beginning CH.
(16 STS, 16 CH spaces) – change color

RND 3: Join new color in a 2 CH space.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), 2 DC into same space. * Work 3 DC into the next 2 CH space. ** Repeat from * to ** 15 times; join with a SL ST into top of 3 CH.  (48 STS) – change color

RND 4: Join new yarn between a pair of DC groups,
CH 4 (counts as 1 DC, 1 CH), work 1 DC into same space, CH 1. *Work a V-ST between next pair of DC groups, CH 1. ** Repeat from * to ** 15 times, join with a SL ST into 3rd of beginning CH.
(32 STS, 32 CH spaces) – change color

RND 5: Join new yarn in a 1 CH space of a V-ST.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same space. *Work 2 DC into next 1 CH space, work 3 DC into next 1 CH space. ** Repeat from * to ** 15 times, work 2 DC into next 1 CH space, join with a SL ST into to f 3 CH. (80 STS) – change color

RND 6: Join new yarn between a group of 3 DC and a 2 DC group.
CH 5 (counts as 1 DC and 2 CH). *Work 1 DC between next pair of DC group, CH 2. **
Repeat from * to ** 31 times, join with a SL ST into 3rd CH of beginning CH.
(32 STS, 32 CH spaces) – change color

RND 7: Join new yarn into a 2 CH space.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 3 DC into same space. *Work 4 DC into next 2 CH space. **
Repeat from * to ** 31 times, join with a SL ST into top of 3 CH.
(128 STS) – change color

RND 8: Join new yarn between a pair of DC groups.
CH 1 and work 1 SC into same space. *CH 3, work 1 SC between next pair of DC groups. ** Repeat from * to ** 31 times, CH 3, join with a SL ST into first SC made.
(32 STS, 32 CH spaces) – change color

RND 9: Join new yarn into a 3 CH space.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same space. *CH1, work 3 DC into next 3 CH space. ** Repeat from * to ** 31 times, CH 1 join with a SL ST into top of 3 CH.
(96 STS, 32 CH spaces) – change color

Rnd 10 to 13 are worked in one color (optional)

RND 10: Join new yarn into 1 CH space.
CH 1 and work 1 SC into same space. *CH 3, work 1 SC into next 1CH space. **
Repeat from * to ** 31 times, CH 3, join with a SL ST into first SC made.
(32 STS, 32 CH spaces)

RND 11: SL ST into 3 CH space, CH 1, (work 4 SC into 3 CH space) x 2. *Work 4 HDC into next 3 CH space, work 4 DC into next 3 CH space, work 2 TR, CH 2, 2 TR into next 3 CH space, work 4 DC into next 3 CH space, work 4 HDC into next 3 CH space, (work 4 SC into 3 CH space) x 3. ** Repeat from * to ** twice more. Work 4 HDC into next 3 CH space, work 4 DC into next 3 CH space, work 2 TR, CH 2, 2 TR into next 3 CH space, work 4 DC into next 3 CH space, work 4 HDC into next 3 CH space, work 4 SC into next 3 CH space, join with a SL ST into first SC made.
(128 STS, 4 CH space)

RND 12: CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 SC into next 7 STS. * Work 1 HDC into next 4 STS, work 1 DC into next 4 STS, work 1 TR into next 2 STS, work 2 TR, CH 2, 2 TR into 2 CH space, work 2 TR into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 4 STS, work 1 HDC into next 4 STS, work 1 SC into next 12 STS. ** Repeat from * to ** twice more.

Work 1 HDC into next 4 STS, work 1 DC into next 4 STS, work 1 TR into next 2 STS, work 2 TR, CH 2, 2 TR into 2 CH space, work 2 TR into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 4 STS, work 1 HDC into next 4 STS, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, join with a SL ST into first SC made.
(144 STS, 4 CH spaces)

RND 13: CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST. *Work 1 SC into each to corner 2 CH space – work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 SC into 2 CH corner space. ** Repeat from * to ** 3 more times, 1 SC into each ST to end of round, join with a SL ST into first SC made.
(156 STS). Fasten off and weave in ends.
