SKILL LEVEL:
Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
MATERIALS:
Yarns:
Approx 20/30 grams of light weight worsted yarn- mixed (leftovers) – yarn color options are indicated in the pattern – the color I used will be highlighted
Note: colors are only a suggestion – any color can be used!
Hooks & Notions:
Hook 3,50 mm (or hook size you are comfortable to work with to make the page pieces)
Yarn needle
Stitch marker
Optional extras:
Buttons
Zipper (19 cm/7,5 inches)
Hooks & Loops
Press Buttons / Fasteners
Glue On Eyes (10 mm) – or embroidery thread to create eyes.

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
SC2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
Notes:
I use US Crochet stitch terminology.
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.
GAUGE:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect.
WHAT YOU WILL CROCHET:
- Tree applique;
- Grass applique;
- Zipper tent/or Flap tent;
- Sun and Moon.
INSTRUCTIONS:
This is worked on the front page if you are doing the playbook; if you are doing the play-mat this is the first square – this is of course optional and you can work the pages and squares in any order!

TREE:
Yarn golden brown/or any brown
CH 32
ROW 1: Work 1 DC into 4th CH; work 1 DC into next 10 CH; CH 10; work 1 DC into 4th CH; work 1 DC into next 7 CH; work 2 DC ‘into’ the DC of the branch; work 1 DC into next 18 CH; TURN
ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into next 15 STS; work 1 HDC into next 5 STS; work 1 SC into next 8 STS; TURN
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
TREE TOP:
Yarn green
Make a magic ring
ROW 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 7 DC into ring (8 DC); TURN
ROW 2: working into FRONT-LOOPS only; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 2 DC into each DC until end (16 DC); TURN
ROW 3: working into BACK-LOOPS only; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next DC. Repeat from until end.
ROW 4: working into FRONT-LOOPS only; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC. Repeat from until end.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
FOR THIS PART WORK INTO THE EXPOSED LOOPS OF EACH ROW!
Yarn assorted greens
Join yarn at the start of the row and into each loop work randomly a collection of 3 STS (SC;HDC;DC) in any order.
Fasten of ends and weave in.
GRASS:
Yarn green
CH 21
This is worked over 21 CH:
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook,
work 1 SC into next 2 CH, work 1 HDC into next 2 CH,
work 1 DC into next 5 CH, SKIP 2 CH, SC into next,
CH 7
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook,
work 1 SC into next 2 CH, 1 HDC into next CH,
1 DC into next 2 CH, SKIP 2 CH, SC into next, CH 9
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook,
work 1 SC into next 2 CH, 1 HDC into next 2 CH,
1 DC into next 3 CH, SKIP 2 CH, work 1 SC into last CH
Continue along the bottom and
work 1 SL ST into each CH
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
NOTE: for the sun and moon – choose your button according to the size of the little fingers. Also you can use a press button – if you do then make a magic circle/ring for the sun.
THE SUN
with yellow green yarn – CH 8
RND 1: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC) work 9 HDC into circle; SL ST into 2nd CH of 2 CH (10 HDC)
RND 2: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC) work 1 HDC into SAME ST; work 2 HDC into each ST all around; SL ST into 2nd CH of 2 CH (20 HDC)
RND 3: CH 1; work 2 SC into each HDC all around; SL ST into first SC (40 HDC)
RND 4: *CH 7; work SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; work 1 HDC into next CH; work 1 DC into next CH; work 1 TR into each of last 2 CH; SKIP next 3 SC; SL ST into next SC**
Repeat from * to ** 9 more times (10 ‘petals’)
Fasten off and weave in ends
THE MOON
with white, pale yellow yarn
CH 12
ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next CH; work 2 DC into next 7 CH; work 1 SC into last 2 CH; TURN
ROW 2: SKIP first SC; work 1 SC into next SC; work 2 SC into each ST until last 2 STS; work 1 SC into next ST; SL ST into last ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
THE TENT: – choose one that you like or that fits your page!
Triangle with Zipper:
Make 2
CH 17
ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end (16 SC); TURN
ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC across; TURN
ROW 3: CH 1; work 2SCtog; work 1 SC into each SC across; TURN
Repeat ROW 2 and 3 until you only have 2 SC left and piece measures approx. 16 cm/6,5 inches – please note this will all depend on your yarn and hook – you can start will less chain if your find the tent too large.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Flap Tent:
CH 21
ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end (20 SC); TURN
ROW 2: CH 1; work 2 SC into first SC; work 1 SC into each SC until LAST 2 SC; SC2tog (20 SC); TURN
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end (20 SC); TURN
ROW 4 – 21: Repeat rows 2 & 3.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Option A: How to attach the Zipper Tent


But even with the machine twice is bad….

With a darker yarn SL ST all round the Tent Pieces. Sew the larger piece to the page – leaving the left side open to form a pocket. See photo.
I used the the ‘outside loops’ of the SL ST stitches to sew the front panel to the main tent piece. It should be able to flap open.
The second panel is sewed to the page on one side only; See photo above.
STEP THREE: Attaching the Sun & Moon.
The sun and moon are detachable appliques and are attached by sewing a button onto the page then adding the sun or moon via the buttonhole.
