Tidal Bloom Crochet Square

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.

You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and provided in the instructions.

MATERIALS:

  • Hook – 4,50 mm (7)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Yarn:
Charity Double Knit Pullskein – 100% Acrylic approx. 70g / 168m / 175 y

• A – Porcelain approx. 10g / 24m / 25y
• B – Snocoon approx. 10g / 24m / 25y
• C – Duck Egg approx. 20g / 48m / 50y
• D – Marron approx. 30g / 72m / 75y

TENSION/GAUGE:

Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However COUNTING your stitches will ensure true success of this project!

SIZE:

Square = Approx. 12 inches

Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size your square will be a different size!

INSTRUCTIONS:

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 4; SL ST into 4th CH from hook to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (this DOES NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked. (12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into any DC.

Special Stitch: 3DCtog/4DCtog: work 3 DC/4 DC (double crochet stitches together into one stitch to create a cluster.

RND 2: CH 2; work 3DCtog into SAME DC; CH 2; *work 4DCtog into next DC; CH 2. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into top of 3DCtog.
(12 x Clusters; 12 x 2 CH spaces) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With C – join into any 2 CH space with a SC.

RND 3: CH 7; work 1 SC into 2 CH from hook; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 2 CH – first Petal created; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space.
*CH 7; work 1 SC into 2 CH from hook; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 2 CH – next Petal created; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space. **
Repeat from * to ** 9 more times.
CH 7; work 1 SC into 2 CH from hook; work 1 HDC into each of next 2 CH; work 1 DC into each of next 2 CH – last Petal created; SL ST into FIRST SC worked.
(12 x Petals; 12 SC) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – SL ST from back to front around ANY SC.

RND 4: *CH 4; SL ST from back to front around next SC. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; CH 4; SL ST into first CH 4 space created.
(12 x 4 CH spaces; 12 x SL ST’s)

RND 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 3 CH; 2 DC] into same 4 CH space – first corner created; work 3 DC into next 4 CH space; work 3 DC into next 4 CH space.
*Work [2 DC; 3 CH; 2 DC] into next 4 CH space – corner created; work 3 DC into next 4 CH space; work 3 DC into next 4 CH space. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(10 DC on each side; 4 x 3 CH corners spaces)

RND 6: SL ST into next 3 CH corner space; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME 3 CH space; CH 1; SL ST into Petal SC; CH 1; work 2 DC into SAME 3 CH corner space;
work 1 DC into each of next 4 DC; SL ST into Petal SC;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 DC; SL ST into Petal SC;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 DC; SL ST into Petal SC.
*Work 2 DC into next 3 CH corner space; CH 1; SL ST into Petal SC; CH 1; work 2 DC into SAME 3 CH corner space;
work 1 DC into each of next 4 DC; SL ST into Petal SC;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 DC; SL ST into Petal SC;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 DC; SL ST into Petal SC. **

RND 7: SL ST into next DC; SL ST into next 1 CH space; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into same 1 CH space; CH 2; work 2 DC into next 1 CH space;
work 1 DC into each of next 14 DC.
*Work 3 DC into next 1 CH space; CH 2; work 2 DC into next 1 CH space;
work 1 DC into each of next 14 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(19 DC on each side; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Up to this round the square measures 6 inches.

With A – join into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 8: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 2 HDC into same corner space; SKIP next DC; work 1 HDC into each of next 18 DC.
*Work 3 HDC into next 2 CH corner space; SKIP next DC; work 1 HDC into each of next 18 DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 2nd of 2 CH.
(18 HDC on each side; 4 x 3 HDC corners) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: for the next round work into the 3rd loop of each HDC ST – EXCEPT when working the 3 HDC for the corners.

B – join into ANY CENTER HDC of a 3 HDC corner group.

RND 9: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 2 HDC into SAME ST; work 1 HDC into each of next 20 HDC (3rd loop).
*Work 3 HDC into next HDC (center of 3 HDC corner group): work 1 HDC into each of next 20 HDC (3rd loop). ** Repeat from* to ** 2 more times.
(20 HDC on each side; 4 x 3 HDC corners) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: for the next round work into the 3rd loop of each HDC ST – EXCEPT when working the 3 HDC for the corners.

C – join into ANY CENTER HDC of a 3 HDC corner group.

RND 10: CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 2 HDC into SAME ST; work 1 HDC into each of next 22 HDC (3rd loop).
*Work 3 HDC into next HDC (center of 3 HDC corner group): work 1 HDC into each of next 22 HDC (3rd loop). ** Repeat from* to ** 2 more times.
(22 HDC on each side; 4 x 3 HDC corners) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: for the next round work into the 3rd loop of each HDC ST – EXCEPT when working the 3 HDC for the corners.

D – join into ANY CENTER HDC of a 3 HDC corner group.

RND 11: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [1 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into SAME ST; work 1 TR into each of next 24 HDC (3rd loop).
*Work [2 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into next HDC (center of 3 HDC corner group): work 1 TR into each of next 24 HDC (3rd loop). ** Repeat from* to ** 2 more times.
(28 TR on each side; 4 x 2 CH corners) Fasten off and weave in ends.

With A – join into any 2 CH corner.

RND 12: Work Starting HDC Popcorn; CH 3; (work Cross Stitch over next 2 TR) x 14; CH 3.
*Work HDC Popcorn into next 2 CH corner space; CH 3; (work Cross Stitch over next 2 TR) x 14; CH 3. ** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into top of starting Popcorn.
(14 x Cross Stitches on each side; 4 x Popcorns; 8 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With B – join into any 3 CH space BEFORE a Popcorn.

RND 13: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same space; work 1 FPDC around next Popcorn; work 2 DC into next 3 CH space; (work 1 Cross Stitch into next Cross Stitch) x 14.
*Work 2 DC into next 3 CH space; work 1 FPDC around next Popcorn; work 2 DC into next 3 CH space; (work 1 Cross Stitch into next Cross Stitch) x 14. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(14 x Cross Stitches on each side; 16 DC; 4 FPDC)

With C – join into any corner FPDC.

RND 14: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into joining FPDC; work 1 Cross Stitch over next 2 DC; (work 1 Cross Stitch into next Cross Stitch) x 14; work 1 Cross Stitch over next 2 DC.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into joining FPDC; work 1 Cross Stitch over next 2 DC; (work 1 Cross Stitch into next Cross Stitch) x 14; work 1 Cross Stitch over next 2 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(16 x Cross Stitches on each side; 16 DC; 4 x 2 CH corners spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With D – join into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 15: CH 5 (counts as 1 DC and 2 CH space); work 1 DC into same corner space; work 1 DC into each DC across.
*Work [1 DC; 2 CH; 1 DC] into next 2 CH corner space; work 1 DC into each DC across. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 5 CH.
